The next morning was Bethany’s day off, so she slept in until the afternoon.

Her throat felt unbearably sore as soon as she woke up. She wondered if she might have caught a cold.

When Jane saw that Bethany was finally awake, she quickly reheated the food she’d prepared earlier.

“Mrs. Brennan, I made some chicken soup for you. Here, have some. I’ll reheat the rest of your meal in the meantime.”

Bethany didn’t see Silas in the dining room.

Noticing Bethany look around, Jane smiled and said, “Mr. Brennan went to work. He told me not to wake you.”

Bethany took a sip of the soup. “I see.”

She had wanted to rest at home for the rest of the day, but she received a call from the nursing home.

It was about Sarah, so Bethany quickly got dressed, grabbed her car keys, and left in a hurry.

Sarah didn’t understand why Diana’s relationship with Bethany had become so tense.

“Diana, when Beth arrives, you two should have a good talk. Beth is a good daughter. She wants to get closer to you, keep shutting her out. If this continues, you’ll only grow further apart.

Sarah had sent Bethany to stay at the Reid residence every summer and winter break over the years. She didn’t make this arrangement to gain anything from the Reid family, but to help Bethany get closer to Diana.

“Forget it. When Beth arrives, talk it out with her.”

Bethany hurried to the nursing home, thinking that maybe Sarah wasn’t feeling well.

When she saw Diana in the garden, though, a flash of anger flared inside her.

Diana, as arrogant as ever, looked at Bethany and pursed her lips. “It’s about time. I’ve been waiting for you.”

Bethany took a deep breath but didn’t look at Diana. Instead, she smiled sweetly at Sarah. “Grandma, I’ll push you over there to enjoy the sun.”

Sarah quickly said, “Beth, have a good talk with your mother. Don’t worry, I have your back.”

Bethany’s eyes welled up instantly.

When she thought about how Diana hadn’t visited the nursing home even once in all these years but was now causing trouble for Sarah over this, her anger flared up again.

She turned back to Diana. “What do you want to say?”

Of course, Diana wasn’t happy with Bethany’s attitude. “Bethany, is this how you talk to your mother? You’ve blocked my number. Are you planning to never contact me again?

“If it weren’t for the Reids, do you really think you could have married Silas? And do you believe marrying him means you’ve become a princess? Without the Reids‘ and my backing, you’ll be abandoned at the drop of a hat!

“Also, he married you because he likes men and wants a substitute to appease his family. Don’t think you’re so charming that he fell for you!”

“Enough!” Sarah slowly walked over. “Diana, how could you talk about Bethany like that?”

Every sentence had cut deep, especially the last. What exactly did she mean by saying Silas liked men?

Sarah tearfully held Bethany’s hand. “Beth, is what your mother said true? Does Silas like men?”

Bethany found no way to deny it. It was true, but she never thought she’d have to reveal it in front of Sarah.

Sarah sighed with understanding and pity for Bethany. “Beth, if that’s the case, just get a divorce. You don’t need a man. I’ll always love you.”
