Chapter 55
The air seemed to suspend for a moment.
Bethany stood there, her face gradually draining of color.
Silas understood what was happening at once. So this was the real problem today.
He let out a soft chuckle and said in a low voice tinged with amusement, “It looks like I haven’t made myself clear enough.”
The hand that had been resting on Bethany’s shoulder slid naturally to her cheek. With two fingers, he lifted her chin.
Under her stunned gaze, he leaned in and kissed her soft, pink lips. There was nothing tentative about it. Moreover, he didn’t stop at a fleeting touch.
Caught completely off guard, Bethany clenched her teeth and resisted, but a moment later, his tongue gently parted her lips.
Warmth spread between their breaths.
Bethany froze in place, trembling as she closed her eyes. In an instant, all her senses sharpened, and the sharp scent of cedarwood on him clung to her breath.
When the kiss ended, Silas pulled back slightly, but his thumb still lingered against her flushed cheek.
He turned to Sarah with a smile on his face. “Sarah, do you still think I like men?”
The orange glow of the sunset traced his sharp features, and the silver wedding band on his ring finger caught a brief flash of light.
The possessiveness in his gaze was so real that even Bethany felt dazed for a moment.
Sarah was stunned for a moment, then finally smiled in relief. “Silas, it’s not that I didn’t believe you. Beth is too innocent, you know. I was afraid she’d be bullied.”
Silas flashed a knowing smile. “She is very innocent, indeed. But when we’re together, I’m the one getting bullied.”
As he spoke, he gestured toward Bethany’s hand, which was pinching his waist out of shyness. “Look, Sarah. She’s sneaking up on me again.”
Bethany’s face instantly burned red. She pulled her hand back and stammered, “I–I didn’t!”
At that, Sarah was completely reassured.
If Silas had made some solemn promises, she might not have believed him. But the affection she’d seen in his eyes couldn’t
be faked.
“Alright. It seems I overthought it. Don’t blame me too much, Silas.”
Silas shook his head. “I wouldn’t dare, Sarah. Otherwise, I don’t know how Beth will deal with me once we get home.”
Together, they finally assured Sarah of their relationship.
Later that day, Bethany repeatedly reminded the caregivers to keep a close eye on Sarah that night and to call her immediately if anything seemed off.
