Ella smiled faintly. “I know Bethany. Yvonne, do you remember that stepsister of mine we used to bully when we were kids?”
Yvonne’s tears stopped abruptly. She sniffled. “Don’t tell me Bethany is your stepsister?”
Ella nodded. “It’s her.”
Yvonne never would have imagined that the girl they used to lock in the attic, the one they constantly mocked, was now her boss. Her sense of injustice intensified.
“Ella, doesn’t your stepmom own that company? One word from her and Bethany would be gone!”
Ella sighed. “Yvonne, you don’t understand. My stepmom arranged a marriage for her. I don’t know exactly which family she’s marrying into, but it’s definitely nothing impressive.
“My mom only let her into the company out of pity. Otherwise, how could my sister have gotten in on her own merit?
“Before this, she was clinging to my fiance as his secretary, trying to seduce him. Thankfully, my fiance wasn’t interested in

Jane smiled at her. “Mrs. Brennan, Mr. Brennan bought these for you.”
Bethany wondered why Silas would buy her flowers. She leaned closer, her fingers pulling out the card. After she read it, her
ears turned bright red.
“I’m sorry. I got carried away last night. I’ll be more careful next time.”
Her mind flashed back to the night before.
Silas had made it into a game, insisting she count how many times he did it. He’d set arbitrary rules and then broken them just to torment her.
She’d shouted herself hoarse. In the end, no matter what Silas said, she refused to count anymore. Yet now, he had the nerve to apologize like this?
Just thinking about how the florist and Jane might have seen this card made Bethany’s cheeks burn. She tore the card to
shreds and threw it in the trash.
Jane watched her retreating figure in confusion. “What’s wrong? Does she not like red roses?”
Silas had just finished an online meeting. When he came out, Jane informed him that Bethany was home.
He headed to her room and knocked, but no one answered. He tried the handle and found the door locked from the inside. He
