CLUE
Chapter 74
Noah moved quickly and managed to squeeze into the elevator just as the two were entering. Bethany saw the man who’d suddenly barged in and pulled Evan protectively behind her, her eyes wary.
“Bethany, we need to talk.”
There were only the three of them in the elevator as Silas was still waiting in the parking garage.
Bethany looked at Noah coldly. “We have nothing to talk about.”
Noah frowned and looked down at the little boy, seemingly trying to figure out his background.
After Keira called yesterday, Noah had gone to find the principal, but Avery had been tight–lipped and refused to reveal anything about Evan’s family.
Of course Noah wouldn’t be able to find out. With Julian’s position in the government, there were plenty of ways to protect his son’s information.
Noah wasn’t trying to investigate Evan. He only wanted to know who was currently backing Bethany.
“You really want to have this conversation in front of a child?”
Bethany scoffed. “Noah, do you enjoy chatting up married women this much? Why don’t you get Ella to introduce you to some, and you can chase after them instead?”
Noah’s temple throbbed, his patience reaching its limit. Evan seemed to understand that this annoying man was Silas‘ rival.
He huffed indignantly. “Mister, you should just give up. You can’t compare to my uncle. He’s way more handsome and richer than you are, and he treats Aunt Betty way better. You’re nowhere near good enough for Aunt Betty!”
Bethany watched the elevator numbers jump to the basement floor. “Let’s go, Evan. Don’t talk to trash or you’ll catch something.”
Bethany pulled Evan away quickly.
Noah stood there in shock, utterly demolished by a six–year–old. All he’d wanted was to talk to Bethany, but now, he was more determined than ever to find out about the man behind them both.
Bethany spotted Silas‘ car from a distance and quickly pulled open the door to get in with Evan.
Silas clicked his tongue in disapproval. “What? Did you see a ghost or something?”
Evan looked especially excited. “Uncle Silas, I just chased away your rival! Aren’t I amazing?”
“Oh?” Silas smiled teasingly. “My rival? Which rival?”
He directed that last question at Bethany.
Bethany pressed her lips together. “We ran into Noah in the elevator.”
Silas let out a light laugh, his tone dismissive. “Oh, him. Mrs. Brennan, is he my rival?”
Noah wasn’t worthy.
Silas stared intently at the woman’s face until she answered, “He’s not.”
Only then did he smile with satisfaction. “Let’s go home now. Evan, stop picking up random words from the TV. When we get back, you’re writing ‘rival‘ a hundred times in your notebook.”
Evan said nothing, and neither did Bethany.
