By then, the envoy who had fled back from the Seventeenth Firmament had already arrived at a vast, imposing palace.
This was the Ember God Palace, the seat of the celestials' Flame Deity line.
The entire palace floated 10 thousand yards in the air, upheld by nine golden towers.
Their bodies had been forged from star-forged godsteel, and at the top of each tower burned primeval divine fire that had never gone out.
Below the palace stretched an endless sea of clouds.
Beneath that lay the rich lands of Ember Province, the most prosperous region in the Eighteenth Firmamentβtens of thousands of miles of fertile fields and hundreds upon hundreds of cities, all crouched beneath the shadow of the Ember God Palace.
This was the foundation of the Flame Deity line in the Eighteenth Firmament.
They had ruled this land for 100 thousand years, and every palace master in its history had stood above Golden Immortal Realm Level Five.
Aurelius sat on the Flame God's Throne in the center of the great hall, fierce golden fire burning all around him.
The flames veiled his face, leaving only a pair of red-gold eyes visible.
At that moment, those eyes were fixed on the envoy kneeling in the middle of the hall.
Most of the envoy's armor had been shattered. The saintlight sigils on it had gone dim.
His empty left sleeve swayed gently in the faint breeze moving through the hall.
Jared had severed that arm with a single sword strike in the Godfall Wastes.
The envoy had only made it back to the Ember God Palace by burning his very source with everything he had. He hadn't even had time to treat the wound on the way back, and golden blood had spilled across tens of thousands of miles behind him.
"So you're telling me," Aurelius said from within the flames, his voice unhurried even as the temperature in the entire hall spiked, "that you and Elliot together were beaten by a junior at True Immortal Realm Level Eight? One sword strike killed one of you, and another took your arm?"
The envoy pressed his forehead to the floor, his voice shaking. "Reporting to Palace Master, that Jared... he carries chaotic force. It suppresses all holy radiance and divine fire. My protective saintlight was like paper in front of him. Senior Elliot's battle-ax was cut in half in one strike. We couldn't stop him at all..."
"Chaotic force."
Aurelius repeated the words once, his red-gold eyes narrowing slightly behind the flames.
"The message that useless Pole Star sent said this boy possessed chaotic force. I assumed it was some crooked imitation, something merely similar to chaotic aura. I didn't expect it to be the real thing."
He rose from the throne.
The flames roared with the motion, and hundreds of divine fire lamps throughout the great hall exploded at once, spraying golden sparks in every direction.
Dozens of elders and disciples standing in attendance dropped to their knees in unison, not one of them daring to lift his head.
"True Immortal Realm Level Eight. Chaotic force. A single strike enough to kill someone at the peak of Golden Immortal Level Three."
Aurelius's voice had gone terrifyingly calm.
"That kind of power across realms... I've only seen it recorded in ancient texts. The bloodline descendants of ancient chaotic divine beasts. Or the lost supreme inheritances of the Daoist path."
He took a few steps.
Each one left a burning footprint on the floor.
"Pole Star Hall was destroyed. Elliot was killed. Hadrian came back missing an arm.
In all the hundreds of thousands of years of the Flame Deity line, we have never suffered humiliation like this."
He stopped and turned, his red-gold gaze sweeping over everyone kneeling in the hall.
"Who will go to the Godfall Wastes and bring this boy back to me?"
Silence crushed the hall.
No one dared answer.
It wasn't because they feared some youth at True Immortal Realm Level Eight. It was because they had heard something else in Aurelius's tone.
The palace master wasn't asking for opinions.
He was calling someone out.
"Garrick."
Aurelius's gaze landed on one of the men below.
He knelt in the first seat among the elders, broad and solid as an iron tower.
His face was square, and there was a sharpness between his brows that only endless bloodshed could have honed.
He was the Grand Elder of the Ember God Palace, at the peak of Golden Immortal Level Three.
Among the Flame Deity line in the Eighteenth Firmament, only Aurelius himself stood above him in cultivation. He also commanded the Ember Drake Guard, the palace's most elite force.
"I am here," Garrick said, lifting his head, his gaze steady.
"Take three squads of the Ember Drake Guard. Bring Elders Vaughn and Silas with you.
