The branches and leaves of the spirit trees swayed in the morning wind, rustling against each other.
The sound was almost like whispering. Almost like an overture to the slaughter about to begin.
The column met no resistance on the way up.
The Ember God Palace had clearly prepared for this. Every disciple had withdrawn inside the palace grounds, waiting for Jared to walk straight into the trap.
A short while later, Jared's group reached the mountain gate of the Ember God Palace.
The gate towered dozens of yards high, forged entirely from red-gold flame crystal.
The pillars were carved with lifelike flame-beasts, and each beast had eyes set with genuine top-grade fire crystals that flashed with burning light under the sun.
Above the gate hung a massive plaque bearing three characters—the Ember God Palace.
The words had been carved with the power of flame law.
Each character burned slowly, giving off a punishing heat.
The mountain gate was shut tight.
A red-gold barrier sealed the entire palace grounds, packed with dense flame sigils that turned one after another across its surface, each one radiating a terrifying heat.
Jared stopped in front of the gate.
His violet eyes rested on the barrier, and not a single ripple crossed his face.
"Aurelius. Come out."
His voice wasn't loud.
But it carried with perfect clarity into every corner of the Ember God Palace, piercing the barrier of the Solar Pyre Dominion Array like an invisible blade and echoing across the square before the main hall.
A moment later, a crack opened slowly in the barrier over the gate.
Aurelius stepped out through it. Gareth followed behind him with the cultivators from the Abyssal Exchange, and behind them came dozens of elders from the Ember God Palace and thousands of disciples.
Aurelius stopped before the gate, his red-gold armor blazing under the sun.
He held the Cinder Emperor's Blade in one hand, and flames roared along the sword until even the air around it warped from the heat.
Satisfaction all but dripped from his face.
His eyes gleamed with smug delight as he looked Jared up and down, one corner of his mouth lifting in naked contempt.
"Jared, you finally made it," Aurelius said, thick with scorn.
"I've been waiting for you a long time."
Jared looked at Aurelius.
Nothing moved in his violet eyes. They were as still as dead water.
"Aurelius, I'm here to kill you."
He said it calmly.
So calmly it didn't even sound like a declaration of war. It sounded like a fact.
Aurelius froze for a beat, then threw his head back and burst out laughing.
The sound rolled across the gate and shook the nearby spirit trees until their branches trembled.
"Kill me?"
Aurelius laughed so hard he nearly lost his breath.
"Jared, with what? These three hundred pieces of trash behind you?"
His gaze swept across the disciples behind Jared, and the contempt in his eyes deepened.
"Three hundred juniors below Golden Immortal Level Three, plus you at Golden Immortal Level One, plus Master Alaric Vale at Golden Immortal Realm Level Five—"
"and you think that's enough to wipe out my Ember God Palace?"
His voice dripped with mockery.
