"What possibility?" Gareth's voice came out rougher than before.
"You don't kill me."
Jared's tone stayed level.
"You work with me. I give the Abyssal Exchange what it wants, and the Abyssal Exchange gives me the protection I want.
That way, what you gain is worth more than anything you'd get from killing me."
Gareth's pupils tightened.
Jared held his gaze and kept going.
"Kill me, and all you get is what's already on me.
Work with me, and there's no limit to what you can gain."
"The Aureate Way has a total of one hundred and eight arts of the Way, and the Aureate Codex is only one of them.
As for the secrets of the Chaos Sanctum, I've only uncovered a tiny piece of them.
The value of all this will keep rising as my cultivation rises."
A cold curve touched the corner of his mouth.
"Kill me, and what you get is dead loot.
Work with me, and what you get is something alive.
Kill me, and all you can take is the present."
"Work with me, and you can take the future.
Envoy Gareth, you're a merchant. You should understand better than I do which choice pays more."
Gareth fell silent.
His brow pulled tight, deep lines cutting across his forehead.
In his red-gold eyes, too many things flashed at once—hesitation, doubt, resistance.
Every word Jared had said was true.
Cedric was already dead.
A dead chapter master had no value left to the Abyssal Exchange.
Picking a fight with a young man whose potential had no visible ceiling, all for the sake of a corpse—no matter how he ran the numbers, it was a losing deal.
But if they let Jared walk away just like this, where would that leave the Abyssal Exchange's reputation?
Gareth was trapped between two impossible choices.
Aurelius watched the hesitation spreading across Gareth's face, and his heart dropped.
He knew it—if Gareth let Jared talk him into this, the Ember God Palace was finished.
He had to stop it.
"Envoy Gareth, don't listen to him!"
Urgency sharpened Aurelius's voice.
"Jared's lying to you. Every word out of his mouth is fake.
He's trying to drive a wedge between us!"
Aurelius turned to face Gareth fully, his red-gold eyes blazing with impatience.
"Envoy Gareth, think about it. Jared killed Cedric. That's an undeniable fact.
If the Abyssal Exchange lets him go like this, how will you ever show your face in the celestial realm?"
"What will the other powers think of you?
They'll say the Abyssal Exchange is nothing—its chapter master got killed, and it didn't even dare take revenge!"
Gareth's frown deepened.
Aurelius wasn't wrong either.
If they released Jared now, the Abyssal Exchange's prestige would take a brutal hit.
"And Envoy Gareth—think a little further."
Aurelius pressed on, his voice rising with every word.
"Jared is fickle and ruthless. He dared kill even Cedric—what is there left that he wouldn't do?
You let him go today, and tomorrow he'll turn on you without a second thought.
A man like that can't be trusted!"
Gareth stayed silent for a long time, his red-gold eyes moving back and forth between Jared and Aurelius.
Jared looked at Gareth.
There was no urgency in his violet eyes, no tension at all—only a calm so complete it felt almost detached from the moment.
He waited for Gareth to choose.
Whatever Gareth decided, Jared already had a way to answer it.
If Gareth chose cooperation, all the better.
That would save everyone a bloodbath.
And if Gareth chose to stand against him, that was fine too.
