His movement was nimble and precise.
Between the trunks, he shifted and turned as if the forest offered no obstacle at all.
As expected, the person behind them sped up.
Jared's lips formed a faint, cold curve.
He led Gwendolyn through a thick curtain of branches, then stopped behind an enormous old tree.
Chaotic force spread from him and sealed both their auras completely.
To anyone searching, they had vanished.
Moments later, a figure slipped out of the canopy and landed in the forest.
He looked around with confusion on his face.
It was a young man in gray robes. His face was so ordinary that it left almost no impression, the kind of face that would disappear forever in a crowd.
He was Golden Immortal Level Three. His aura was steady, and it was clear he had been trained specifically for tracking.
"Where did they go?" he muttered.
His gray eyes scanned the trees. His spirit sense spread at full strength.
Nothing.
"Looking for me?"
The calm question came from behind him.
The young man's body locked up.
Every hair on him stood on end.
He tried to turn, but a cold blade had already touched his neck.
Violet light flowed along the sword, and the pressure from it made his heart shake.
The Dragonslayer Sword.
"Do not move," Jared said. His tone stayed calm. "If you move, you die."
The young man's face went white. Sweat rolled down his forehead in heavy drops.
He could feel it.
The power in that sword could cut him down in an instant.
He was Golden Immortal Level Three, yet before Jared, who appeared to be Golden Immortal Level One, he could not even gather the courage to resist.
"Who... who are you?" he stammered. "I am only a wandering cultivator. I was passing through. I have no ill will."
Jared did not bother answering.
He lifted his left hand.
A thread of gray chaotic force shot from his fingertip and entered the young man's body.
The young man stiffened violently.
Agony twisted his face.
Chaotic force moved through him like a poisonous snake, drilling through his meridians. Wherever it passed, pain tore through him as if his body were being ripped open from the inside.
"Ah..."
A scream burst from him. He shook all over. Veins bulged across his forehead, and blood filled his eyes.
"I will ask once more," Jared said. "Who are you? Who sent you?"
The young man's lips trembled. He still tried to hold back.
Jared moved his left hand slightly.
The chaotic force shrank, then burst inside the man's spirit well.
"Ah!!!"
This scream was far worse.
The young man collapsed and convulsed on the ground.
Inside his spirit well, chaotic force rampaged through his spiritual power like living fire. Every flare burned pain directly into him.
It was worse than torture.
This was not merely the body suffering. Chaotic force attacked spiritual power and meridians themselves. The pain came from the soul.
"I... I will talk..."
His voice was faint, barely louder than a mosquito. Terror filled his eyes. "I am a disciple of the Golden Crow clan... The clan chief... sent me to follow you..."
"The celestials already know we are here."
"Yes." Jared nodded. "And they are looking. Dozens of celestial factions have joined forces and set the Worldlock Net."
"What should we do?"
Jared thought for a moment.
A faint light passed through his violet eyes.
"Change our appearances and auras first."
He continued, "Chaotic force can imitate any aura. I can make the Frost God's power in you appear as ordinary spiritual fluctuation. Our faces can be adjusted with spiritual power too. As long as no one studies us closely, we should not be recognized."
Gwendolyn nodded.
They found a hidden cave and began to disguise themselves.
Jared circulated chaotic force.
The aura inside him shifted.
Chaotic force was the source of all elements. Imitating another kind of power was effortless.
The gray force flowed through him and gradually became the calm, balanced aura of an ordinary Golden Immortal Level One cultivator.
Nothing special.
Nothing memorable.
His face changed as well.
His violet eyes turned black. The sharp coldness in his features softened. He now looked like a perfectly ordinary young cultivator, the type no one would look at twice in a crowd.
Gwendolyn also withdrew her aura.
The Frost God's power sank into her body. The icy-blue glow faded and was replaced by the ordinary aura of a Golden Immortal Level Three cultivator.
Her appearance shifted from breathtakingly beautiful to simple and plain.
Plain only by comparison.
She was still pretty.
"This should work," Jared said after looking her over. "Unless we meet an Arch-Immortal-level expert, no one should see through it."
