Gwendolyn looked at Jared's new face. A small smile touched her lips.
"You seem much easier to look at this way."
Jared did not answer.
He turned and left the cave.
They continued southeast.
According to the Golden Crow disciple, a large city called Bermu City stood in that direction. It was a gathering place for human cultivators in the Nineteenth Firmament.
It did not belong to any celestial force. Wandering cultivators and merchant guilds gathered there, making it the best place to ask for information.
After roughly four hours of flight, Jared's spirit sense caught violent spiritual fluctuations ahead.
A fight.
Not a sparring match.
A real life-or-death struggle.
The shockwaves from clashing spiritual power rolled through the air, carrying even the faint smell of blood.
Jared narrowed his eyes and extended his spirit sense.
About fifteen miles ahead, on a broad plain, ten human cultivators were surrounding an enormous demon beast.
The beast was black from head to toe and as large as a small mountain. Its limbs were thick as stone pillars. Sharp bone spikes covered its back, each one glinting with an eerie chill.
Its head looked half wolf and half dog. Two rows of fangs lined its gaping mouth, and drool dripped from its jaws. Wherever the saliva landed, smoking holes corroded into the ground.
A demon hound.
A Golden Immortal Level Five demon beast.
Jared had read about this creature in the ancient records of the Aureate Way.
Demon hounds were savage, tough, and extremely hard to injure. Ordinary Golden Immortal Level Five cultivators were no match for them.
Worse, they lived in packs.
They usually moved in groups. Sometimes three or five. Sometimes several dozen.
This one was probably a sentry, assigned to patrol the pack's territory. Its body was huge, but among demon hounds, it was only middle-sized.
The leader of the ten human cultivators was a middle-aged man with a solid build and a firm face. He was Golden Immortal Level Five.
He wielded a crimson longblade wreathed in flames. Each slash released a wave of scorching heat and left charred marks on the demon hound.
But the beast's defenses were far too strong.
The wounds looked brutal, yet they barely cut past the surface.
The other nine cultivators were all Golden Immortal Level Four. They used all kinds of weapons: swords, blades, spears, hammers. Their attacks struck the demon hound again and again, but they could not break its hide. At most, they left pale streaks across its fur.
The demon hound growled and spat black poison mist from its jaws.
Grass withered wherever the mist passed. The earth rotted. A sharp stench spread through the air.
The ten human cultivators clearly feared the poison. They attacked while retreating, trying to keep distance from the beast.
But they were too slow.
The demon hound lunged.
Its huge body came down like a moving mountain, crushing toward the nine Golden Immortal Level Four cultivators.
The middle-aged man's face changed. He swung the crimson longblade with all his strength, sending a huge arc of blade-light through the air and into the demon hound's body.
Boom!
The demon hound staggered, but only for a moment.
It steadied itself almost immediately, locked its blood-red eyes on the nine cultivators, and roared with greater fury.
The middle-aged man dragged Jared for more than thirty miles.
Only after they had left demon hound territory far behind did he stop.
He let go of Jared's wrist, bent forward, and gasped for air. Sweat covered his forehead.
"You two..."
He looked up at Jared and Gwendolyn, his eyes full of blame. "Golden Immortal Level One and Level Three, and you went into demon hound territory? Do you not value your lives? Do you know what those things are? Peak Golden Immortal Level Five demon beasts. One bite would swallow you whole."
Jared looked at him with calm black eyes.
"We were only passing through."
"Passing through?"
The middle-aged man's voice rose. "Passing through does not mean walking into demon hound land. That road is their territory. Everything within hundreds of miles belongs to them. How did you get there? Did no one warn you?"
Jared shook his head.
The middle-aged man took a deep breath and forced down his anger. He studied the two of them again.
"You are from out of town?"
"Yes," Jared said. "We just arrived in the Nineteenth Firmament. We do not know the area."
That softened the man's expression.
"No wonder."
He shook his head. "You were lucky you ran into us. Otherwise, both of you would have died today."
He pointed back the way they had come.
"You cannot take that road anymore. Demon hound territory is large, hundreds of miles across. If you go around, you will lose several days."
Jared asked, "Then why did you enter their territory?"
