Jared stood in the spirit herb garden, watching the cultivators search for the non-existent teleportation array.
The smile at the corner of his mouth grew wider.
He held Gwendolyn's hand and walked to an ordinary patch of grass in the northwest corner.
Nothing about it stood out.
Just plain ground.
But Jared could sense the spatial movement here. It was more active than in the rest of the garden.
That was the trace left behind when the old man from the Celestial Stairway set up his paid transfer service.
Even without placing a real teleportation array, he still had to leave a spatial mark somewhere to send people upward after collecting the fee.
Jared crouched and pressed one palm to the ground.
He closed his eyes.
Chaotic force moved through his body. Gray light flowed from his palm and sank into the soil.
Inside his core, the seed of spatial law turned slowly, releasing a faint silver glow.
His control over spatial law was still not perfect.
But opening a temporary passage to the second floor was well within his ability.
Gray chaotic force spread through the earth like fine roots, slipping into the cracks of space.
A moment later, silver-white light surfaced from the ground.
It brightened, widened, and formed a circular gate. Soft light rippled inside like water in a mirror.
The passage to the second floor had opened.
Jared stood and brushed the dirt from his hands.
Then he turned toward the cultivators still searching the garden and called out clearly.
"Everyone. The passage to the second floor is here. Thirty high-grade crystals per person. First come, first served."
His voice was not loud.
Still, every person heard it.
The cultivators froze.
Then they all turned toward Jared and stared at the silver light gate on the ground.
Shock.
Suspicion.
Excitement.
All of it appeared on their faces.
"What? A passage?"
"Who is this guy? How did he find the array?"
"Wait, the old man said the array was free, did he not?"
"Who cares? Thirty high-grade crystals to go up? The old man wants fifty."
The crowd stirred.
Some hesitated. Some watched. Some had already started walking over.
A young cultivator reached Jared first.
He looked down at the light gate, then back at Jared, still wary.
"Is this passage safe? You are not going to send me somewhere dangerous, are you?"
Jared smiled.
"If you trust me, go in. If you do not, keep searching for the teleportation array. The old man said it is somewhere on this floor. Take your time."
The young cultivator gritted his teeth.
He looked at the people still digging around the garden.
Then he looked at the silver-white gate.
Finally, he made his choice.
"I will go."
He handed over thirty high-grade crystals.
Jared accepted them and stepped aside.
"Go ahead."
The young cultivator took a deep breath and stepped into the light.
Silver radiance flashed.
He vanished.
A few seconds later, his voice came back through the gate.
"I really reached the second floor! Hahaha! Thirty crystals and I am up. That is twenty cheaper than the old man's price."
That one sentence shattered the last of the crowd's doubt.
"I am going too."
"Me too. Thirty crystals, right?"
"Hurry. Do not let the passage close."
"If you can, we will all follow you."
Jared looked at their eager faces and nodded with a smile.
"I can. But wait a little. I want to see this floor first."
He did not open the passage immediately.
Instead, he walked around the spirit crystal cavern with Gwendolyn.
As expected, it did not take long for the old voice to sound again.
"Fellow cultivators, the second-floor spirit crystal cavern contains many spirit crystal veins, ranging from one hundred years old to ten thousand years old.
"To enter the third floor, find the teleportation array leading upward. Of course, if you cannot locate it, you may pay one hundred high-grade crystals and be sent straight to the third floor."
Laughter broke through the crowd.
"One hundred? That is expensive."
"We already have someone who opens passages. Thirty crystals."
"The old man must be crazy for money."
The old voice went quiet.
After a moment, it returned with obvious confusion.
"Someone can open passages? Who?"
Everyone looked at Jared.
Jared smiled and said nothing.
He walked to a corner of the cavern, crouched, and pressed his palm to the ground again.
Chaotic force slipped into the spatial cracks beneath the floor.
Silver-white light rose once more and formed another gate.
"The passage to the third floor is still thirty high-grade crystals."
His tone was calm.
The cultivators cheered and lined up again.
This time, even those who had been thinking of paying the old man one hundred crystals ran to Jared.
Thirty or one hundred.
Only an idiot would choose one hundred.
As for the spirit crystal veins on the second floor, no one cared anymore.
If better things were above, why waste time digging here?
