Jared barely raised the Dragonslayer Sword in time.
Golden light struck the blade.
The impact burst through his guard and tore across the flesh between his shoulder and neck, opening a savage wound deep enough to expose bone.
Scalding blood ran beneath his collar and soaked into the gray robe. Residual divine heat in the wound burned against the torn flesh.
Jared staggered and almost fell.
The last trace of chaotic flame around him went out.
His core was completely empty.
He could no longer gather even a single sword light.
Gwendolyn failed to evade the rest of the attack.
Several narrow streaks of divine radiance grazed her arms and legs, opening a web of cuts. Celestial fire clung to the wounds and burned into her skin with piercing pain.
Her origin power was gone.
The thin ice barrier around her collapsed on its own, and she no longer had the strength to raise another.
Violet was in no better condition.
Her immortal essence had dried up. Even keeping a firm grip on her sword was difficult now, and the light around her had faded almost to nothing.
This was no longer simply a disadvantage.
It was a dead end.
Aureon approached at an unhurried pace, divine light covering his body as he looked down on the three wounded cultivators who had exhausted every trump card they possessed.
"Three dying strays," he said with a cruel smile. "Have you struggled enough?
"Then I'll send all three of you down together. I'll have your souls imprisoned in the Divine Realm and burned for eternity."
He raised the restored Celestial Emperor's Sovereign Blade.
A towering concentration of golden light gathered at its tip.
The killing strike swelled until the sky itself seemed to change color and the wind stopped moving.
Then, just before the sword came down, a ripple passed through an empty corner of space.
A figure stepped out of a crack in the void.
Heavy black robes covered him from head to toe.
A deep hood hid his face, and not an inch of skin was visible.
The aura surrounding him was cold in a way that had nothing to do with ice.
It was bitterly cold, deathly, and impossibly deepβthe sensation of something that belonged beyond ordinary life.
It was not demonic energy.
Not divine radiance.
Not immortal spiritual power.
It seemed detached from the Five Elements and outside the cycle of the six paths, drawn from the depths of the Ninefold Nether and aimed directly at the foundation of the soul.
A pitch-black short blade rested in his right hand.
Ghostly blue fire flowed along it.
The flame made no sound as it burned the surrounding void and extinguished stray spiritual light. Merely looking at it made the soul ache.
The Ghost Clan.
Across the countless worlds, they specialized in the laws of the soul and wielded Ninefold Nether flame. Among all the peoples Jared knew, they were the one race uniquely capable of bypassing the body and striking directly at the soul's source.
Jared's pupils contracted.
Then wild joy hit him so hard that the hope he had nearly lost flared back to life in an instant.
He knew this aura.
It was the same presence he remembered from Luther.
The black-robed cultivator approached Jared and bowed slightly.
When he spoke, his voice came from deep inside the hood, hoarse and low, like wind traveling through an abyss.
"Mr. Chance. I am Ghost Seven, wielder of the Ninefold Nether Blade.
"You once aided the Ghost Clan and saved our Venerable from the celestials. My people have never forgotten that debt.
"When we learned that you had been trapped in a death trap tied to the Divine Realm, I came down from the Upper Realm to help."
Jared stared at him, forcing the surge of emotion under control.
"You can attack the core divine soul?"
Ghost Seven raised his head.
Two vertical pupils glowed ghostly blue beneath the hood. Undying nether flame burned deep inside them as pressure from his soul spread quietly through the air.
"Yes.
"When a celestial using this resurrection method dies, the divine soul briefly leaves the body. It passes through a dimensional vortex and returns to the Divine Realm.
"If the soul is intercepted before it enters that vortex and its foundation is burned away, the pull can be severed permanently.
"Then there is no resurrection."
That was enough.
A path had opened inside a dead end.
For the first time since Aureon explained the secret of his resurrection, there was a method that actually addressed the true problem instead of destroying another temporary body.
Light returned to Jared's eyes.
He suppressed the pain throughout his body and gave his orders one by one.
"Four directions. Final formation.
"Violet, take him from the front. Force him to focus on his body and disrupt his attention.
"Gwendolyn, freeze the surrounding space. Lock down the area around the dimensional vortex and cut off every path of escape.
"Ghost Seven, hide in the void. Wait until the instant Aureon's body dies, then destroy the soul when it leaves him."
"As you command."
All four moved.
