Jared left Elder Nether's cavern. Dark red mineral light spilled through cracks beside the stone staircase, laying mottled patterns across the ground beneath his feet.

Cold nether energy rose slowly from the abyss with a faint moan, brushing his robe without carrying away the doubts churning within him.

He had promised not to pursue the fissure, yet the ink-black opening that had swallowed countless Ghost Clan cultivators remained branded in his mind like a hideous scar.

Ten thousand years of sacrifice, the deaths of nearly 1,000 cultivators, the mysterious unidentifiable presence, and the exhaustion and bitterness Elder Nether could not hide all pointed to something deeply unnatural.

Gwendolyn's brows drew together, anger flashing through her ice-blue eyes. "They use the lives of their own people to suppress it? That's monstrous. Has the Ghost Clan truly failed to find any other way after all these years?"

"Elder Nether said an Abyssal Lord tried to end the sacrifices 3,000 years ago. The resulting eruption of nether energy caused terrible losses."

Jared tapped a fingertip lightly against his knee, cold light passing through his violet eyes. "But something about this is wrong. Something must be hiding beyond that fissure. It can't be as simple as a disturbance in the nether energy. I'm going to investigate in secret."

"In secret?"

Gwendolyn was startled. "Both Elder Nether and Ghost Seven warned you how dangerous it is. This is an internal matter of the Ghost Clan. Won't interfering bring trouble down on us?"

"Of course it will, but I can't stand aside and do nothing."

Jared met her gaze, his tone resolute. "That fissure is consuming living people. I can also feel that whatever lies behind it is no simple thing. I have to find out the truth."

"Elder Nether will certainly have someone watch you in secret. He won't allow you to interfere," Gwendolyn said.

"I have it handled."

Jared inclined his head. A wisp of chaotic force gathered at his fingertip and merged into his soul. "Chaotic force can sense the laws in all things. If anyone follows me, I'll know at once.

"I won't act immediately, either. First, I'll ask around discreetly and see whether the other Ghost Clan cultivators know anything."

For the next two days, Jared behaved with impeccable restraint.

By day, he meditated in the cave. Occasionally, he walked along the rope bridges, but whenever the fissure came into view in the distance, he turned away on his own.

The Ghost Clan cultivators Elder Nether had assigned to observe him reported that Mr. Chance appeared to have set aside his curiosity and had not approached the fissure again. Elder Nether relaxed slightly.
