None of them looked surprised to see me.

“What is going on here?”

I stared at him.

Then slowly turned my head, glancing over my shoulder at Kyle.

He was right behind me.

My gaze shifted back to the elders.

And I almost laughed.

Security?

That was what they were going with?

“How interesting,” I said, my tone flat, edged with something I didn’t bother to hide. “A discussion on security… without the head warrior present.”

I tilted my head slightly.

“Or the Alpha.”

No one rushed to correct it.

“We intended to bring it to your attention,” she said.

A few of them avoided my gaze.

One shifted in his seat.

Another looked like he would rather be anywhere else but here.

That told me more than anything they had said so far.

I folded my arms slowly across my chest.

“I’m waiting,” I said.

Mathias straightened slightly, taking that as his opening.

“The full moon is approaching,” he said.

I waited for him to continue.

“And we are not comfortable,” he continued, “with how security has been handled.”

Kyle stepped forward slightly behind me.

“What exactly are you referring to?” he asked, his voice controlled but firm. “Security measures have already been put in place–as instructed earlier this week.”

Mathias didn’t even look at him.

His focus stayed on me.

“With all due respect to you, Alpha,” he said, his tone steady, “it is almost useless preparing for external threats-”

A slight pause. “when we are ignoring the possible threat within.”

The words settled in the room like something heavy.

Placed exactly where they were meant to land.

Mathias continued, like he had been waiting for that moment.

“For instance,” he said, his tone measured, “the new boy.“”

There was a slight shift in the room.

He didn’t say the name immediately.

Didn’t need to.

We all knew who he meant.

“Roman,” he added after a beat.

“His wolf is unstable,” Mathias went on. “That much is not speculation. It is something we are all aware of.

My jaw tightened slightly.

Behind me, I could feel Kyle go still.

“And that is aside from the fact,” Mathias continued, leaning forward just a fraction, “that he is an outsider.

“In our midst,” he finished.

I had seen that one coming.

There were those who would never accept him.

Not fully.

Not without reason to question him.
