FAYE
I looked up at him.
The question was simple.
And for a second, I thought about brushing it off.
Keeping it light.
“I was upset,” I said, shrugging slightly. “I wasn’t thinking straight.”
“No,” Alexander said.

“It wasn’t just anger,” I added quietly. “It was… something else. And I couldn’t stop it.”
I shook my head once, a faint, frustrated breath leaving me.
“I hated it,” I said. “I still do.”
I waited.
For the reaction.
For the shock.
For something.
But it didn’t come the way I expected.

My jaw tightened slightly.
“Wait,” I said.
She paused mid–sentence, looking at me. “What is it?”
I stepped closer, my gaze fixed on her wrist now.
“There,” I said, reaching for her hand before she could pull it away. “What happened there?”
She frowned, glancing down at where I was holding her.
“What are you talking about?” she asked, almost laughing.
I turned her wrist slightly so she could see it.
But she didn’t react.
At all.
She just looked at it for a second… then back at me, confused.
“I don’t see anything,” she said.
I stilled.
“You don’t?”
She shook her head. “Are you messing with me right now?”
I didn’t answer.
Instead, my thumb moved lightly over the spot.
The moment I touched it, she flinched.
“Okay–yeah,” she said quickly, pulling her wrist back just a little. “That feels weird.”
I looked up at her. “Weird?”
She flexed her hand slightly, like she was trying to figure it out herself.
“Hot,” she said after a second. “Not painful… just-” she exhaled lightly. “I don’t know. Irritating.”
Her brows pulled together faintly as she looked at her wrist again.
“Maybe I got a sunburn or something,” she added. “Or an insect bite. I was in the woods all day.”
I watched her for another second.
Then let it go.
Because she moved before I could say more.

“I can’t deal with you being mad at me right now,” she said against me. “Not with everything else going on.”
I almost rolled my eyes.
“I wasn’t mad at you,” I said.
Still, she didn’t pull away.
Her grip tightened slightly.
I let out a slow breath and pulled her in properly this time.
“I’m not upset with you. It was just a slap… I can take more than that.”
She pulled back to look at my face, and I just had to smile.
“And… hey, I’m sorry about the way I reacted.”
I stopped, dragging a hand briefly over the back of her shoulder before letting it settle again.
“I walked into the bathroom, and you were under the water,” I said. “You weren’t moving.”
Even saying it now didn’t sit right.
“I didn’t think,” I continued. “I just reacted… I panicked.”
A sound came through–someone cleared his throat.
It wasn’t loud, but it was enough to break the moment cleanly.
I turned slightly, my attention snapping toward him.
It was Kyle.
There was something in his expression, like he had been deciding whether or not to speak.
“Kyle?” I said.
He inclined his head slightly. “Alpha, Luna.”
A brief pause followed, just enough for him to choose his words.
“I would like a moment,” he said, “to speak with you.”
I glanced at Faye briefly, then back at him.
“Go ahead,” I said.
Kyle didn’t hesitate after that.
“Alpha, the council is currently holding a meeting,” he said.
My brows drew together faintly.

“A meeting?” I repeated.
He nodded once.
“At this hour,” he added, “and without prior notice.”
I looked at Faye, and she looked as confused as I was.
Kyle continued. “I was not informed,” he said. “And with both you and the Luna absent-”
He paused slightly, choosing his next words more carefully.
“It raised questions.”
I didn’t interrupt.
“I thought it best to confirm directly,” he finished, “before drawing any conclusions.”
For a moment, I just looked at him.
Processing.
Because something about that didn’t sit right.
At all.
A council meeting without my knowledge.
That wasn’t oversight.
That was intentional.
My jaw tightened slightly.
“Are you sure about this?”
