hapter 534
FAYE
By the time I finished breakfast, I felt slightly better.
It wasn’t as if the food had somehow chased away the uneasiness sitting in my chest.
It hadn’t.
If anything, my thoughts had only become more restless.
But sitting alone with nothing to occupy my mind had been far worse.
At least breakfast had given me something else to focus on, even if only briefly.
I left the dining room and made my way toward the main living room.
The pack house was much livelier now than it had been earlier that morning.
As I rounded the corner into the living room, I found Cole standing near one of the windows with a mug of
coffee in one hand.
He appeared to be reading something on his phone until he noticed me approaching.
His expression immediately softened.
“Morning,” Cole said.
“Morning,” I replied with a smile.
We stopped a few feet apart.
“I didn’t see you during breakfast,” I said.
Cole lifted his mug slightly.
“I already ate.”
I nodded.
There was a brief silence before I asked the question that had been occupying my mind since I left the
hallway.
“Is Alexander still outside with those men?” I asked.
Cole shook his head.
“No.”
I felt a small wave of relief.
“So he’s done?”
Chapter 534
“Not exactly, Cole replied.
“He took another sip from his mug before continuing. “He’s back in his office now.”
“Oh.”
I smiled faintly.
“That’s good.”
Cole gave me a knowing look.
“But he isn’t alone.”
My smile faded.
“What do you mean?”
“There are people with him,” Cole said.
I frowned slightly.
“The same men from outside?” I asked.
“Some of them,” Cole said.
He shrugged.
“I think there are only two with him now.”
Curiosity immediately replaced my disappointment.
“What’s happening?” I asked.
Cole shook his head.
“I honestly don’t know everything yet,” he said.
He leaned one shoulder casually against the wall.
“I’ve only caught bits and pieces.”
“What have you heard?” I asked.
“They’re some of the wolves assigned to the border,” he said.
“The border?” I repeated.
Cole nodded.
“Apparently.”
He frowned thoughtfully.
“I haven’t had time to find out exactly what’s happened.”

Chapter 524-
His expression became more serious
“But if it involves the border…”
He didn’t finish the sentence
He didn’t need to.
I understood.
Border issues were never simple.
Whether they involved trespassers, rogue wolves, neighboring packs, or missing patrols…
Anything concerning the borders demanded Alexander’s immediate and full attention.
As Alpha, he couldn’t simply postpone something like that.
Not even for me.
Not even for Helen.
A quiet sigh escaped me before I could stop it.
Cole noticed.
“You were planning on going somewhere together today?” he asked.
“Yes.”
I was going to ask how he knew, but there was no point.
I smiled faintly.
“We wanted to visit Helen.”
Understanding crossed his face immediately.
I looked toward the staircase leading to the upper floor.
The office wasn’t far.
Perhaps…
I should speak to him myself.
Claim
If this meeting truly was as important as it sounded, then there was no reason for both of us to postpone
seeing Helen.
One of us could still go.
The thought settled surprisingly quickly in my mind.
I looked back at Cole.
“Thank you,” I said.
Chapter 534
He smiled.
“You’re welcome.”
Without wasting another moment, I turned and headed upstairs.
Claim
The familiar hallway leading toward Alexander’s office was much quieter than the rest of the pack house.
As I approached the door/I slowed.
Muted voices drifted through the wood.
The conversation sounded tense.
One voice belonged to Alexander.
The other two…
I didn’t recognize them.
I knocked lightly.
The conversation stopped almost immediately.
“Come in,” Alexander called.
I opened the door and stepped inside.
The atmosphere in the office was noticeably heavier than I’d expected.
Alexander stood near his desk.
Two men occupied the chairs opposite him.
They both looked irritated.
One of them folded his arms tightly across his chest.
The other stared blankly at Alexander’s desk.
Neither of them looked pleased to see their meeting interrupted.
I smiled politely anyway.
“Good morning,” I said.
Neither man answered.
They simply looked at me before returning their attention to Alexander.
I wasn’t surprised.
Judging by the expressions on their faces, they clearly had other things on their minds.
I hadn’t entered the room looking for a conversation with either of them anyway.
Chapter 534
My attention remained entirely on Alexander.
“He looked tired.
Far more tired than he had when he’d left our room earlier that morning.
His hair was still slightly untidy from rushing out of bed.
The T–shirt he’d thrown on earlier was faintly creased.
Even from where I stood, I could tell he’d been rubbing his forehead repeatedly.
His exhaustion showed in every line of his face.
“I just need a minute,” I said.
Alexander looked from me to the two men seated in front of him.
Then he nodded.
“Would you excuse us for a moment?” Alexander asked.
Neither man looked happy about it.
The older of the two let out a slow breath before pushing himself to his feet.
The second followed immediately after.
Neither of them spoke as they walked toward the door.
They brushed past me without offering so much as a greeting.
A moment later, the door closed behind them.
Silence settled over the office.
Alexander rubbed both hands across his face before letting out a long breath.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
“I know.”
I walked closer to his desk.
“I can see you’re busy.”
He leaned one hand against the edge of the desk.
“I didn’t think this would take so long,” he said.
“I know.”
His eyes met mine.
I could see the frustration there.
