Chapter 535
FAYE
The drive through Blood Crescent was quieter than I expected.
Perhaps it was because my mind refused to settle.
My fingers tightened slightly around the steering wheel.
I hoped I was wrong.
I wanted to be wrong.
If this entire trip ended with Helen laughing at how worried I had become over a nightmare, I would happily accept the embarrassment.
Anything was better than the alternative.
The roads gradually became less crowded the farther I drove from the pack house.

A few wolves passed, acknowledging my car with respectful nods.
I returned the gesture absentmindedly before focusing on the road again.
The sooner I reached Helen’s house, the sooner my mind could finally settle.
Just as the road curved around a wooded stretch, movement suddenly caught my eye.
A young woman burst out from the trees.
She ran straight into the middle of the road.
“Oh, my God!”
My heart lurched.
I slammed my foot on the brake.
The tyres screamed against the road as the car jerked violently to a stop.
Everything inside the vehicle shifted forward from the force.
For one terrifying second, I thought I had hit her.
The young woman crumpled onto the road a few feet in front of the car.
I stared through the windshield, my pulse hammering against my ribs.
“…No.”
I threw the gear into park and immediately pushed the door open.
The cool morning air hit my face as I hurried around the front of the vehicle.

“Are you alright?” I called out.
The young woman remained on the ground.
Her shoulders trembled slightly as though she was trying to recover from the shock.
Guilt settled heavily in my stomach.
I didn’t think I’d actually made contact with her, but I’d come close enough that she could easily have
fallen trying to avoid the car.
I slowed as I approached.
“Can you hear me?”
Still no answer.
I crouched beside her.
“Are you hurt?”
The woman suddenly looked up.
She smiled.
Every instinct inside me screamed.
I barely had time to react before something flashed beneath the sleeve of her jacket.
Silver.
A narrow silver blade shot toward my chest.
I threw myself backward on instinct.
The blade sliced through the front of my blouse instead of sinking into my skin.
I stumbled several steps back before regaining my balance.
The woman was already on her feet.
There wasn’t a trace of fear or pain left on her face.
Only amusement.
My eyes narrowed.
“It was a trap,” I muttered.
She twirled the silver blade casually between her fingers.
“Smart,” she said.

The compliment dripped with mockery. “I was beginning to wonder how long it would take you to figure that out, Your Majesty.”

Before I could answer, I heard rustling behind me.
“Then to my left.
Then to my right.
The sound came from every direction at once.
I slowly turned my head.
Men began emerging from the trees surrounding the road.
One after another.
Some carried silver weapons, openly.
Others wore confident smiles that suggested this had gone exactly according to plan.
Within seconds, they had spread out into a loose circle around me.
I glanced toward my car.
Two more men had already positioned themselves beside it, cutting off the easiest route back.
So that had been their plan all along.
Get me out of the vehicle.
Separate me from the only cover I had.
The woman casually rested the silver blade against her shoulder.
“I have to admit,” she said with a grin, “you really are as compassionate as they said.”
I didn’t answer.
Instead, I slowly straightened.
The fear that had flared inside me a moment ago disappeared just as quickly as it had come.
In its place settled something far colder.
My gaze swept over every face surrounding me.
They had planned this.
They knew exactly who I was.
And somehow…
Clas
They had been bold enough to stage an ambush for the Luna of Blood Crescent while she was still inside Blood Crescent territory.
I bared my fangs.
My nails lengthened into razor–sharp claws.

If they wanted me…
“They were going to have to earn me.
The moment the first attacker closed the distance between us, instinct took over.
I moved before he could.
I slipped out of the path of the silver blade, drove my shoulder into him, and sent him stumbling into
another man who had been rushing toward me.
The brief collision bought me exactly what I needed.
Space.
I didn’t waste it.
I pivoted away from the center of the road before they could surround me again, forcing them to keep
turning to face me instead of trapping me where they wanted.
Two more charged at once.

I ducked beneath one attack, sidestepped the other, and shoved one of them hard enough that he crashed
into the side of my car.
Another reached for me from behind.
I spun just in time, caught his wrist before the silver weapon could reach me, forced his arm away, and
threw him off balance.
Someone shouted for the others to spread out.
