Chapter 570
ALEXANDER
Ambrose followed me to the office without saying a word.
The silence between us stretched all the way from the living room to the second floor. It wasn’t the comfortable kind of silence that came naturally between people who had nothing
to say.
It was tense. The kind that settled over two people who both knew an unpleasant conversation was only moments away.
I opened the office door and walked in first.
Ambrose remained a respectful distance behind me until I crossed over to my desk.
I took my seat. Only then did I look up at him.
He was still standing.
His hands were clasped tightly in front of him.
His posture was straight, but there was something about the stiffness in his shoulders that immediately caught my attention. His eyes met mine briefly before shifting away again.
He already knew.
He might not know exactly what I was about to say, but he knew why he had been called here. Someone must have given him a clue.
I didn’t speak immediately.
Instead, I simply watched him.
People revealed far more in silence than they ever did through words.
Ambrose tried to stand still.
He failed.
His fingers twitched once before tightening around each other again.
His weight shifted almost imperceptibly from one foot to the other.
He glanced toward the desk.

Then away.
Then back again.
By the time nearly a minute had passed, I had seen enough.
“Sit.”
My voice was calm.
Ambrose looked up almost immediately.
“Thank you, Alpha.”
He pulled one of the chairs opposite my desk and lowered himself onto it.
Even then, he didn’t look comfortable.
He sat near the edge of the chair instead of leaning back, his hands resting on his knees for only a second before they found each other again.
I reached for the drawer on my right and pulled out a thick brown folder.
Without saying a word, I placed it on the desk between us.
It landed with a dull thud.
Ambrose’s eyes dropped to it.
“Open it.”
There was the slightest hesitation.
Only a second.
But I noticed it.
He slowly reached forward, pulled the folder closer to himself, and opened it.
His movements became slower as he began turning the pages.
One after another: project approval forms, material requests, completion certificates, inspection reports, and financial releases.
Every document bore the same signature.
His.
I remained silent while he continued flipping through them.

He knew exactly what he was looking at.
When he reached the final page, he carefully closed the folder again.
Neither of us spoke for several long seconds.
I folded my hands together on the desk.
“A few things stood out during my visit to the eastern border yesterday.”
I made sure my tone remained even.
“There was a water project that was supposedly completed.”
I tapped the folder lightly.
“According to this report, the work met every approved specification months ago.”
I paused.
“But from what I saw, it didn’t.”
Ambrose lowered his eyes.
I continued.
“The clinic was listed as having received the equipment I approved.”
Another pause.
“It hasn’t.”
I leaned back slightly.
“The school renovation… The same story.”
I paused for a moment.
“Those are just the major ones. There are other ones too,” I said. “Like the road repairs, the security outposts, the storage facilities…”
I named each project one after another, allowing every word to settle between us.
“The reports you gave don’t tally with what I saw.”
The office became cold.
“So…” I looked directly at him. “Explain yourself.”
Chapter 570
Ambrose drew in a slow breath. “Alpha, I—”
I raised a hand.
He stopped immediately.
“You have one chance to save yourself.” My voice remained controlled.
I watched his face carefully. “So choose your next words wisely.”
I leaned forward slightly. “If you waste this opportunity…”
I held his gaze.
“…you’re finished.”
The words were not loud. They didn’t need to be. I could already see the effect they had on
him.
A bead of sweat formed near his temple.
He swallowed.
His fingers tightened around each other again before slowly coming apart.
He opened his mouth, closed it, tried again.
But nothing came out. His breathing became noticeably heavier. He was trying to compose himself… Trying to think. Trying to decide which explanation had the best chance of surviving.
