Chapter 571
I simply waited.
Eventually, Ambrose pushed his chair back so abruptly that it scraped loudly against the floor
Before I could say another word, he dropped to his knees
“Alpha…” His voice cracked, “Please”
He lowered his head. “Have mercy on me.”
I said nothing.
“I had no choice,” he said. His shoulders trembled
“I swear… I had no choice,” he added.
He still hadn’t admitted anything. Not directly
But I already saw the crack
Truthfully, I hadn’t expected it to take much longer than this. I had known Ambrose for years.
He wasn’t a hardened criminal. He wasn’t the kind of man who could lie convincingly under
pressure.
If anything, that was probably what had landed him in this situation to begin with. An honest man placed under the wrong kind of pressure often made desperate decisions.
Ambrose remained on his knees for several moments.
His breathing was uneven, and his head stayed lowered as if he was too ashamed to look at
I didn’t tell him to stand.
I didn’t tell him everything would be fine. That would be giving him false hope.
Because whatever his reasons were, the damage had already been done.
“You said you had no choice.” My voice remained calm. “Explain,” I said.
Ambrose swallowed.
Then he finally lifted his head slightly.
Chester 974
It wasn’t supposed to become this.” The words came out quietly, “I swear to you, Alpha. It wasn’t supposed to go this far
I said nothing.
That seemed to make it harder for him to continue.
“I was only asked to make small changes at first.” His eyes dropped again. “Small adjustments.”
A bitter smile appeared on his face. “That’s what I was told.”
I remained silent as he continued.
“The first time, it was a supplier change. The materials delivered were not the ones originally approved, but I was told they were equivalent. I was told there would be no much difference.”
His hands tightened.
*Then it became the reports.”
A pause.
“Then the inspections.”
Ambrose looked like he was struggling with every word. “Every time I considered reporting it, I was reminded of what would happen.”
His voice lowered. “To my family,” he added.
That caught my attention.
It confirmed exactly what kind of person I was dealing with.
Someone who didn’t need to threaten everyone.
Someone who knew exactly where to apply pressure.
“He knew my family was the only thing I would never risk,” Ambrose continued.
His voice became rough. “He made sure I understood that.”
I watched him carefully. “Who?” I asked.
Ambrose hesitated… Only briefly.
“Vince,” he said.
The name settled between us.
I took a moment to let it sink in.
Vince… I hadn’t ruled anyone out, but Vince wasn’t the first person who would have come to
mind.
Ambrose continued, “He approached me because I was the one overseeing the projects. He knew my signature was required before funds could be released and before completion reports could be accepted.”
His face tightened with shame.
“At first, I thought I could manage it. I thought I could fix things quietly before anyone
noticed.”
He shook his head. “I was wrong.”
He looked toward the folder on the desk.
“Every time another issue appeared, I was told to update another report… Another explanation. Another excuse.”
He paused for a second.
“Eventually, I was no longer fixing anything.” His voice dropped. “I was covering up.”
The room went quiet again.
He hadn’t been the person behind the plan.
He had been the person whose position made the plan possible.
“I should have come to you.” His voice cracked. “I know that. I should have told you the first time. But I was afraid… My family was going to pay for it if I did.”
I looked at him, and I felt no pity for him.
Fear explained why someone made one mistake, but it did not excuse months of crime.
Especially in a situation as serious as this.
