Sure enough… the screen had locked itself.

I couldn’t stop myself from taughing.

“So much for being busy,” I said.

His mouth twitched, and I stepped closer. Close enough that I could see the tiny reflection of the water in his eyes.

He looked down at me quietly.

“Either come into the water with me…” I started, gently slipping the phone from his hand and placing it on the nearby chair.

…or stop pretending that phone is more interesting than I am,” I added. “Put it away.”

Alexander slowly exhaled.

“Do’l have a choice?”

“Of course not,” I said.

A reluctant smile finally appeared on his face.

He shook his head before following me toward the edge of the pool.

His hands disappeared into the pockets of his swim shorts.

I noticed immediately. He always did that whenever he was trying very hard not to touch me. He was trying to behave himself the best way he could.

Watching Alexander try not to lose control was one of my favourites.

I reached for his wrist instead and gently pulled him closer until he stood right at the edge of the pool.

I looked up at him.

“There, much better.”

He looked down at me with that familiar expression that always appeared whenever he knew I was testing his self-control.

Maybe I was… Maybe I wasn’t.

Before he could decide, I grinned and slipped backwards into the water again.

The cool water swallowed me instantly.

I stood exactly where she had left me… at the edge of the pool.

Cole was saying something from one of the lounge chairs.

Irene was laughing loudly about whatever ridiculous joke he had just made.

Helen looked happier than she had all day, I noticed all of it.

My eyes always found their way back to Faye.

She moved through the water as though she belonged there.

Every stroke was smooth and effortless. She was simply enjoying herself, and that made it even worse for

The water seemed to suit her.

It clung to her skin, caught the evening light, and made every movement look graceful.

She surfaced after another dive, pushing her wet hair back with both hands before laughing at something

Irene said.

I felt myself smiling without realising it.

Aiden was unusually calm now. He was just as captivated as I was.

“Mate,” Aiden whispered.

“I noticed,” I muttered under my breath.

He didn’t answer. I already knew what he was thinking. But with my entire family out here, I needed to keep it together.

I really couldn’t wait for the pool session to be over.

Faye swam toward the deeper end before turning effortlessly and gliding back again.

I had lived with this woman, shared a home with her, spent countless hours beside her, Yet I had never seen this side of her.

She looked completely at ease, her confidence obvious in every movement she made.

“You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?” I murmured.

Across the pool, Faye turned at exactly that moment.

Almost as though she’d heard me. I think she did.

Our eyes met. A slow smile spread across her face.

Cole suddenly appeared beside me carrying a bottle of water.

He followed my line of sight. Then he looked at me. Then back at Faye.

You are in trouble, man,” Cole said.

I frowned.

“What?”

He tried very hard not to laugh.

“You’ve been standing here for almost ten minutes,” he said. –

“So?”

“You haven’t blinked,” Cole said.

I looked away from the pool and finally gave him my full attention.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Cole nodded very seriously.

“Of course you don’t.”

He took a slow drink of his water before speaking again.

“I’ve never seen someone look at his mate like she’s the only person on earth.”

I said nothing.

“There are other people here, Alexander,” he continued teasing.

Cole could really be that childish if he wanted to be. It was so annoying and funny at the same time.

“I am aware,” I said.

“Are you?”

I gave him a flat look.

He grinned.

“I don’t blame you,” he said.

Faye had reached the shallow end again.

She laughed as Irene splashed water toward her before immediately splashing her back.

It occurred to me then that I hadn’t seen her this relaxed in a very long time. That alone made the trip

worthwhile.

If spending one day away from responsibilities gave me this version of her…

Perhaps Faye had been right all along. Maybe I really had needed this more than I realised.

I felt myself relax.

The tension I’d carried eased.

Chapter 519-

Then I noticed movement beside me:

Two hands landed squarely against my back.

A hard shove followed.

For one ridiculous second, all I saw was blue.

The rest of the sentence disappeared beneath the water. A loud splash echoed across the pool.

Cold water surrounded me instantly.

I surfaced almost immediately, pushing my wet hair back as I glared toward the edge.

Cole stood exactly where I’d been standing, both hands raised triumphantly.
