Chapter 606

ALEXANDER

Nearly an hour had passed since I called Dr. Adams. I had tried to distract myself with work while I waited for her, but it hadn’t gone particularly well.

I had gone through the same report twice without realizing it, and every attempt to focus eventually brought my thoughts back to what had happened outside.

Whatever this was, I needed an explanation soon.

Or at the very least, I needed to rule out the obvious. Normally, I wouldn’t be bothered by something like this, but I had witnessed a lot of things that seemed small turn into something serious and out of the ordinary.

So maybe I was being paranoid, but I had a good reason to be.

When another ten minutes passed without a knock on my office door, I decided to go downstairs

instead.

Perhaps she had arrived and someone had delayed her on the way.

I left my office and made my way down the staircase.

As I reached the last few steps, voices drifted into the hallway from the living room.

It was Dr. Adams and Faye. The two of them were standing a short distance apart, speaking

casually.

Dr. Adams noticed me first but continued the conversation she was having with Faye.

“I couldn’t come sooner,” she was saying. “The clinic has been unusually busy today. Every time I

thought I was finished, another patient came in.”

Faye smiled politely. “I can imagine,” Faye said.

Dr. Adams gave a small laugh.

“I told the Alpha I would come as soon as I was done, but today simply refused to cooperate. I

hope he’s not upset.”

That earned her a puzzled look from Faye.

She tilted her head slightly before asking, “What exactly are you doing here?”

There was genuine curiosity in her voice.

She clearly hadn’t expected to see the pack doctor in this wing today.

Before Dr. Adams could answer, I reached the bottom of the staircase.

“Good evening, Doctor.”

Dr. Adams turned toward me immediately.

“Good evening, Alpha.”

I nodded in greeting before gesturing toward the hallway.

“Please join me in the office.”

“Of course,” she said.

Dr. Adams offered Faye a polite smile.

“If you’ll excuse me, Luna.”

Faye nodded, still looking mildly confused as Dr. Adams stepped away from her and walked

toward me.

Without another word, I turned and led the way back toward the office.

She didn’t ask questions as we walked through the hallway, nor did she try to guess why I had

called for her.

Once we reached my office, I pushed the door open and stepped aside to let her enter first. She walked in at an unhurried pace, her eyes briefly taking in the room before settling on me.

I closed the door behind us.

“Please, have a seat.”

I gestured toward the sitting area instead of my desk.

If this had been about pack business, I would have remained behind the desk as I usually did. This

wasn’t.

Dr. Adams nodded her thanks and crossed to one of the couches before sitting down comfortably.

I waited until she had settled before taking the seat beside her, leaving enough space for her to be

comfortable.

“I need your opinion on something,” I said.

“I’m listening.”

I rested my forearms on my knees, my hands loosely clasped together.

“This has happened twice now.”

She didn’t interrupt.

“The first time was a few days ago.”

I paused briefly, replaying the memory in my mind.

“I developed a sudden headache. It wasn’t particularly severe at first, but it came without warning

Then I felt some kind of pressure in my chest.”

I frowned slightly.

“I don’t know how else to describe it.”

I searched for the right words.

“It wasn’t exactly pain.”

“Pressure?” she asked.

I nodded.

“Yes.”

I continued.

“And then my wolf became restless.”

That finally caught her attention.

She leaned forward slightly.

“Restless how?”

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.”

That answer frustrated me almost as much as the incident itself.

“It wasn’t aggression. There wasn’t any danger around me,” I said. “My wolf simply… stirred.”

The word sounded inadequate. It still didn’t fully describe what I had felt.

“It felt like he was trying to come forward. But there was no reason for him to,” I added.

She remained thoughtful.

“It happened again today,” I said.

This time, I explained everything from beginning to end. How Kyle and I had simply been

discussing routine security matters.

How the headache had started exactly the same way. How the pressure had spread from my head

into my chest.

How my wolf had reasted before I could understand what was happening.

When I finished speaking, the room fell quiet again. Dr. Adams didn’t answer immediately.

She was silent, like she was mentally putting pieces together. Then she asked the last question

expected.

“How many hours do you sleep every day?”

I blinked.

“I beg your pardon?”

“Your sleep,” she said.

Her tone remained calm.

“How many hours do you sleep?” she asked again.

I leaned back slightly.

“I don’t know exactly.”

She waited as I thought about it.

“I can’t remember the last time I slept during the day.”

She nodded slowly.

“And at night?” she asked.

“Usually…”

I frowned as I tried to estimate it.

“Three… Sometimes four hours.”

She looked at me for several seconds.

“Every night?”

“Most nights,” I corrected.

Her face remained calm.

“You consider that enough?” she asked.

When I didn’t reply, she sighed. She folded her hands neatly on her lap before speaking again.

“The human body has limits. So does a wolf.”

I listened without interrupting, but I already knew where she was going with this.

“You carry an enormous amount of responsibility every day.”

She glanced briefly around the office.

“I imagine your work rarely ends when everyone else goes to bed,” she added.

A small smile crossed her face before disappearing again. Then she became serious.

“Alpha Alexander, prolonged physical and mental strain affects more than the body. It affects the

wolf as well.”

I frowned.

“When the body is consistently pushed beyond what it should tolerate, your wolf begins

compensating,” she added.

She gestured gently with one hand.

“At first, it’s barely noticeable. Then the strain builds. The connection between the two becomes
