“She gave me the dosage.”

She hesitated for a moment. She seemed almost embarrassed as she spoke.

“I didn’t know you weren’t feeling well either. You should have told me, Alexander,” she said. I didn’t know what to say. She looked concerned, and I could tell she really was.

I looked away for a moment. There were several things I could have said. I could have told her that she had no right to ask me about telling her anything… Not after what she had done.

But I didn’t say anything like that. I couldn’t let my anger get the better of me. This was still Faye.

And also… I didn’t have the energy for that. Despite everything, I didn’t want to turn what she was saying into an argument.

“It’s okay,” I said.

I could tell she wasn’t completely surprised that I was brushing it off easily. She already knew I wasn’t going to give her more than that at the moment.

“You don’t have to worry about it.”

I could feel her eyes following me as I walked past her and headed toward the stairs.

“I need to take a shower,” I said.

I didn’t wait for her response. I kept walking.

FAYE

I knew Alexander was angry with me.

He hadn’t said it directly, but his mood and the way he had reacted to me had said enough. There was a distance in his voice that hadn’t been there before, and even though he hadn’t raised his voice or said anything harsh, I could feel the anger beneath his silence.

I wanted to apologize. I wanted to tell him that I was sorry I hadn’t told him immediately after Helen had confided in me about her condition.

But as I stood there thinking about it, I realized something.

I wasn’t actually sorry. Not for keeping Helen’s confidence.

Helen had asked me not to tell him. She had told me that she wanted to speak to her children

herself, and as difficult as it had been to keep something that serious from him, I hadn’t felt that it was my place to go against her wishes.

If Helen had trusted me with something so sensitive and specifically asked me to keep it from her son, then I had no right to decide that I knew better than she did.

I could explain that to Alexander…

We would have that conversation eventually, and I would make him understand why I had done what I did.

But not tonight. Not while he was still carrying that much anger inside him.

He probably wouldn’t listen to understand me right now. He would hear the words, perhaps, but his mind was already made up, and trying to explain myself while he was still angry would only make things worse.
