A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1009

You couldn't blame Starla for assuming the worst.

If her own brother and Herbert had proven to be completely untrustworthy, how could she possibly trust one of Fairfax's old brothers? Especially since Fairfax was dead now...

Before all this, Herbert and Fairfax had been practically brothers too, and look how that turned out!

The more she thought about it, the more defensive and guarded Starla's gaze became as she stared at Romy.

"You don't need to look at me like that. I'm absolutely no threat to you," Romy promised.

"Is that so?"

Starla let out a cold, cynical laugh.

Sensing her deep suspicion, Romy desperately tried to vouch for Amos. "Mr. Kunan isn't like Mr. Farley or your brother. He has no bad intentions toward you."

The defense sounded incredibly weak.

Starla simply stared back with eyes as sharp as ice, refusing to say a word.

"Stop looking at me like that. I swear I'm telling the truth. Besides, we've built some rapport over this time, haven't we? I wouldn't lie to you."

"Rapport?"

Hearing that word, Starla genuinely felt like she was listening to a bad joke.

Rapport? She couldn't even trust her own flesh-and-blood brother. The idea of "rapport" was a total joke.

"You don't believe me?" Romy asked.

Starla remained silent.

Believe?

The mocking smile on her lips only deepened. In her world right now, "belief" was a luxury she couldn't afford. There was no trust left anywhere.

She didn't dare trust anyone. It was undeniably tragic, but it was also survival. In this ruthless environment, blindly trusting anyone was a death sentence.

"Ugh, look..."

Romy was completely out of ideas. When Amos had first given her this order, she had warned him that it would make Starla deeply suspicious. And once Starla got suspicious, things were going to get incredibly difficult. But Amos refused to listen, so here she was, stuck executing a terrible plan.

Starla pressed her lips together.

No time limit! Meaning it was entirely open-ended. That made things incredibly tricky.

Starla tossed and turned the entire night, sleep completely evading her. The very next morning, she immediately started formulating a plan to escape Sylvan Vale.

Later, Tanya Mercer called.

"Darian Lynn hasn't stopped looking for me."

"Yeah, I know," Starla replied.

Her contacts in Maxlandia had kept her thoroughly updated. Darian wasn't just frantically searching for Tanya; he was also hunting for Starla to demand Yulisa Moore back.

She had been so entirely consumed by the bloodbath on Manton Isle these past few days that she hadn't had a spare second to care about Darian and Yulisa's petty drama.

"What's the situation in Marina City right now?" Starla asked.

She had completely tuned out the news, so she had no idea who Darian had ultimately thrown to the wolves.
