As soon as Starla was brought to the estate, she met the woman who had been Yardley's first love—Yvonne.

A few minutes later, he ended the call and walked back inside.

He glanced at Starla, who was sitting stiffly on the sofa. She ignored him, letting him stew in his own dark mood.

She didn't know who had been on the phone, but there were only two things in the world that could make Fairfax look that murderous: something concerning his empire, or something concerning her.

And if it was about both of them, it likely involved Herbert or Yardley.

Since he didn't speak, Starla didn't bother asking.

Finally, Fairfax broke the silence. "Your brother is going to marry Susanna."

Fairfax flinched.

Amos had warned him repeatedly over the last few weeks about how desperately Starla wanted to erase her connection to Yardley. She absolutely despised being called his sister.

"Why are you even telling me this?" Starla demanded. "Do you expect me to march up to Yardley and demand he call off the wedding? Do you honestly think I have that kind of power over him?"
