A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1040

"You've completely sided with Fairfax, haven't you?!"

The moment Fairfax was brought into the equation, Herbert's voice dropped to a freezing temperature.

Ever since he found out Fairfax was still alive, he had been living in a state of constant, gnawing anxiety.

And now, knowing Starla was physically with Fairfax...

She used to be deeply in love with him!

Herbert knew exactly how shamelessly persistent Fairfax could be when he wanted something.

With Starla right beside him...

This was an absolute nightmare for Herbert.

"Herbert!"

"You knew he wasn't dead this whole time."

Herbert cut her off, his voice trembling with barely restrained fury.

Before Starla could respond, he pushed further. "And you know he's actively plotting against us."

She knew Fairfax was aiming straight for him and Yardley.

Yet she had never once leaked the information that Fairfax was alive. That meant... she was entirely on Fairfax's side.

"After everything he did to you, you..."

Herbert's voice grew so thick with emotion he couldn't even finish the sentence.

It was true. Back in Marina City, Fairfax had treated her like garbage. She had suffered endlessly at his hands.

But in the end? When the world caught fire, she still chose to stand behind Fairfax.

"Did you just forget all the pain he caused you? Or do you just love him that much? You love him so much that even after everything he did, you're still standing by his side?"

With every word, the bitter jealousy in his voice became more obvious.

He was jealous of Fairfax.

What... what right did that bastard have?

Faced with Herbert's accusations, Starla didn't bother defending herself. She didn't bother explaining that she had had absolutely no idea Fairfax was alive.

Honestly.

Finding out Fairfax survived had been a massive shock to her too.

During the ambush at the Black Sea, Fairfax had been pinned down by a three-way crossfire from General Licht, Herbert, and Yardley.

The fact that he managed to crawl out of that alive was nothing short of a miracle.

"They broke in to steal Susanna. Susanna belongs to your brother. What do you think?"

"So it was Yardley who nearly killed them?"

Hearing the absolute venom in her voice, Herbert's breath caught in his throat.

"Fine. I understand," Starla said coldly.

"What does that mean?"

"If I'm making an enemy out of him, then so be it. It's not like he ever treated me like a real sister anyway, did he?"

Earlier, Herbert had made it sound like some catastrophic betrayal.

Claiming that staying in Cyrus Sea meant going to war with her own family...!

What a joke!

They had never given a damn about her in the first place, had they?

So if they were enemies now, fine. She didn't care!

"Are you insane?" Herbert breathed.

"Yes, I'm insane. And you all drove me there."
