"Don't compare us. We are not the same!" Amos mentally spat at the comparison. Compare myself to you? As if you even measure up! Amos wasn't just being arrogant; Yvonne loved him for a reason. "Then do you honestly believe she's really dead?" Fairfax asked softly.
Amos stared at him. Seriously? Still daydreaming in broad daylight? Amos knew Fairfax had been in denial, but they had all been there. They had seen it.
"Are you still trapped in this delusion?" Amos demanded. "What's your plan? If she's alive, are you going to abandon her and throw her to the wolves again until she actually dies?" To Amos, Fairfax had witnessed the aftermath with his own eyes. What was there left to doubt?
"I never saw her body!" Fairfax insisted.
"But you saw—"
"It wasn't intact!"
Amos was speechless. Fairfax sounded entirely convinced that unless he saw a perfectly preserved corpse, he wouldn't believe it. It was darkly ironic.
