"Yardley sent someone to Marina City to erase your legal existence," Herbert told her. "He also sent divorce papers to Cyrus Sea for Fairfax to sign. You'll be completely cut off from him soon."
Starla blinked, processing the news while Herbert spoon-fed her some warm soup.
She knew she couldn't fight Herbert right now. Ever since he returned from Shark Sea, he seemed surprisingly relaxed.
"That's fine," she murmured. It was probably the only sensible thing Yardley had done in a long time. If he hadn't, she would have had to figure out a way to disappear legally herself.
Herbert nodded. "I was planning to wipe your records in the city myself, but now I don't have to."
With a new identity, Starla would be virtually impossible to track, even if Fairfax and Yardley scoured the globe.
"Want more?" he asked.
"No, I'm good." Her appetite was small, hampered by the constant pain.
Herbert handed the bowl to a maid. Once they were alone, he reached for her hand. Starla instinctively yanked it back.
An empty ache flickered in his chest.
"Don't touch me unless it's necessary," her voice was ice.
"Right. Unnecessary contact," he agreed quietly, aware of her deep-seated aversion.
