A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1145

Herbert stared at her, unwavering in his demand.

Starla narrowed her eyes. "What's the point of forcing a promise like that?"

Did he actually believe that extracting a verbal agreement would magically give him what he wanted? If he did, he was incredibly naive—and she knew for a fact that he was anything but naive.

He had no answer. What was the point? To him, any method that kept them together was completely justified.

She turned away, having lost all desire to entertain the conversation. "Just let Tanya go. Don't touch her."

That had been her only condition from the start. As for his demands, she wouldn't even dignify them with a direct response.

Herbert sensed the shift. He was pushing too hard, moving too fast. If he kept insisting, it would only breed more resentment.

Reluctantly, he nodded. "Alright."

If she wanted her friend to leave, then so be it. Given their tight bond, he figured it was highly unlikely Tanya would ever breathe a word about their survival anyway.

...

The cracks in their relationship ran too deep. No matter how much effort Herbert poured into fixing things, he couldn't win back her heart. They were stuck at an agonizing standstill.

Meanwhile, over at the Cyrus Sea...

After receiving the news of Herbert's supposed death, Fairfax Yelchin had fallen into a heavy silence. His earlier paranoid insistence that Starla was still alive had momentarily quieted down. Now, he spent his days drowning his misery in alcohol.

"She's definitely not dead... she can't be..." he slurred drunkenly, rambling to anyone who would listen.

When Yvonne went looking for Amos, she found Fairfax muttering endlessly about Starla still being alive. She rolled her eyes so hard it physically hurt. She had absolutely zero sympathy for the man.

"I just can't stand guys like that!" she scoffed. She made zero effort to hide her disdain. If she didn't like someone, she made sure everyone knew it.

Amos gently chided her, saying it wasn't a good look to be so brutally blunt about disliking people. But Yvonne didn't care. Her feelings were written all over her face, much to his exasperated amusement.

"He doesn't need your approval anyway," Amos teased. "If you actually liked him, we'd have a real problem."

If she fell for a guy like Fairfax, it would break Amos's heart. He definitely didn't want that.

Hearing this, Yvonne wanted to smack him upside the head. "What kind of nonsense are you spouting?"

"I'm serious! Thank God you can't stand him. If you actually saw something in him, that's when I'd really be stressing out."

She couldn't help but laugh. It was true—since Amos had come into her life, she hadn't looked twice at another man.
