Herbert frowned, following her gaze. "Yes. Once the snow stops, we'll head straight into spring. It's beautiful here."
Starla remained silent. Yes, it would be beautiful. She had fallen in love with this place just from seeing photos. What a shame that such a breathtaking haven was tainted by his presence.
"Fairfax is completely focused on your brother right now," Herbert added, trying to reassure her. "He probably doesn't have the time or energy to question our supposed deaths."

The word made her heart skip a painful beat. If Fairfax had suspicions—and she knew he did—he was only lacking proof. With Yardley putting on such a show, Fairfax likely didn't have the luxury to dig deeper. He might have even started to believe she was truly dead.
Herbert reached out and covered her hand with his. Instantly, she pulled away.
His eyes darkened, a flash of stiffness betraying his composure. He could practically feel the physical wall she had built against him. She despised his touch. A bitter pang tightened his chest.
"When are you going to let your guard down?" he murmured.
She was defensive, terrified of trusting anyone or any emotion. And he knew exactly who was to blame for that: Fairfax, Yardley, and... him. They were the ones who had shattered her faith in love.
Starla didn't answer. Lately, Herbert had been trying to dismantle her cynical view of relationships, but she always met his attempts with silence. Silence was the only answer she had left to give.
