A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1199

Despite Romy's earlier confession, nothing about her demeanor matched a woman blinded by love. It didn't fit her personality at all.

"Why wouldn't I? Do you think I'm incapable of falling for someone?" Romy fired back, adopting a flippant, casual tone.

Starla didn't buy it for a second. Romy was definitely hiding a major ulterior motive.

When Starla didn't reply, Romy waved a hand in front of her face. "Earth to Starla."

Starla blinked and went back to eating in silence.

"Want my help?" Romy asked lazily.

"No." If this were the old Romy, Starla might have accepted. But this Romy was operating on a different wavelength. "Does Amos know you're here?"

"Nope. Why would I tell him?" This was clearly a rogue operation.

Starla gave her a sidelong glance. "You're one of his top people. You don't think he's looking for you?"

"I left a note. They won't look."

"Saying what?"

"That I'm off to pursue my own life."

"Why do you think she's here?"

"Perhaps... for you?"

Herbert's face hardened. "Get rid of her." He and Starla were at a critical juncture. He couldn't afford any wildcards ruining his progress. He had learned from Fairfax's disastrous handling of Brinley. Hidden threats had to be eliminated.

"It might not be that simple to make her leave," Rudolf cautioned. "She went through a lot of trouble to track this place down."

That fact alone fueled Herbert's paranoia. Their trail had been impeccably scrubbed. Finding them required immense resources and determination.

"However," Rudolf added, "based on what little we could piece together, her arrival doesn't seem to be motivated by romantic interest."
