A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1252

Despite the deep-seated hatred between them, Fairfax had managed to completely step back from Starla's life. It was a clear testament to how profoundly he cared for her.

However, those extraordinary feelings were ultimately no match for the other heavy burdens weighing on his heart. The fact that he could let her go now was honestly the best outcome for Starla.

"That's good."

"Now it's just your brother, Yardley. We still don't know where he stands," Romy pointed out.

And the quieter things were, the more unsettling it felt. The fact that Yardley was keeping Susanna by his side proved she held a unique place in his life, and that kind of special status carried a lot of influence.

Starla let out a dry scoff. "Him? We'll just have to wait and see. If he doesn't make a move, I won't either. But if he does..."

She didn't finish the thought, but if Yardley really did let Susanna pull his strings, Starla wasn't just going to sit there and wait to die.

Mistakes had been made, but what was done was done.

...

Romy kept a close eye on Yardley's movements, but she wasn't the only one. Miles away in Marina City, Herbert was also monitoring the situation. He knew Susanna had remained by Yardley's side.

Herbert was a man who planned ten steps ahead. He considered all the angles Starla was worried about, as well as the ones she hadn't even thought of yet.

At the Farley Group headquarters, Herbert had reinstated many of the operations he had previously halted, even bringing the Maxlandia assets back under his control. He was reclaiming everything he had once abandoned for Starla.

Standing by the floor-to-ceiling window, he held a cigarette between his fingers, staring out at the ocean.

Rudolf took a phone call, and his expression immediately darkened. "Understood," he said coldly into the receiver.

Since returning from Smaro Town, Herbert had gained a lot of clarity. She was miserable with him because they were fundamentally on different wavelengths, and time wasn't going to fix that. Now, all he wanted was for her to be happy and live the peaceful life she craved.

But it seemed Yardley was dead set on shattering that peace.

Herbert's breathing grew heavy. "Yardley, she is your biological sister. Are you really going to do this for Susannaโ€”"

"I just want to bring her home!" Yardley cut him off, his tone just as stubborn and uncompromising.

Herbert's eyes narrowed. "It seems we have nothing more to discuss."

Without waiting for another word, Herbert ended the call. The temperature in the office plummeted, settling into a freezing, suffocating chill.
