Susanna answered almost immediately.

The only sound coming through the speaker was her cold, measured breathing. Not so long ago, she used to greet him warmly with his name. But that all stopped the day Fairfax told her not to touch Starla.

"She's back in Maxlandia, isn't she?" Fairfax asked.

"You certainly get your news fast. Was there a point to this call?"

"What exactly are you and Yardley planning?" Fairfax demanded, his words practically grinding past his teeth.

The air over the phone line seemed to freeze.

"Speak!" Fairfax barked, his voice rising in panic at her silence.

"Three lives. Asking her to pay with just one isn't asking for too much, is it?" Susanna replied coolly.

Fairfax's heart slammed into his throat.

"Don't you dare!"

"How can you still be protecting her?" Susanna's voice turned absolutely glacial. "Have you forgotten? The people who died were our family! She murdered them!"

"Yes, and because they were my family, I..." Fairfax choked on the words, unable to finish.

Because they were his family, he had spent all his energy protecting them! But later, he realized it was all wrong. Everything had been a massive mistake.

He took a ragged breath. "The person you should be hating is me!"

"If that's what you're going to say, then we have nothing left to talk about."

Susanna hung up. When Fairfax tried calling her back, she simply ignored the ringing.

Standing on the deck of a private vessel, watching his calls get repeatedly dismissed, Fairfax felt a surge of rage so intense he wanted to smash his phone against the railing.

Thad hurried over. "Sir, Mr. Farley is already on a flight to Maxlandia."

Hearing that Herbert was also en route, Fairfax's mind immediately flashed back to Herbert's warning.

A violent shudder wracked his chest.

Herbert definitely knew something was off between Susanna and Yardley. If he got to Maxlandia and confirmed his suspicions... he would absolutely execute Susanna without a second thought.
