A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1289

Susanna's panic was spiraling out of control. She had been about to beg Fairfax to get on the next flight out of Maxlandia, but now...

"What are we going to do?" she asked, her voice trembling. If Elmer had trapped him, it was a death sentence.

"I have to go," Fairfax said abruptly.

"Fairfax, wait!" Susanna cried out, desperate to keep him on the line. "You have to find a way out! Don't let his men find you!"

The line went dead.

Susanna stared at her phone, listening to the dial tone. He was trapped. He was completely surrounded in hostile territory.

She lost her mind. Frantically, she dialed Yardley's number.

This time, he answered.

"You're still awake?" Yardley's voice was gravelly with exhaustion.

"Are you coming over tonight?" she blurted out.

Yardley paused, clearly taken aback. She had never asked for him before. For months, she had done nothing but look for ways to escape him. This sudden clinginess was completely out of character.

"What happened?" Yardley demanded, instantly on alert. He wasn't an idiot; he knew she was playing an angle.

The moment he asked, Susanna broke down in loud, ragged sobs.

"Susanna!" he snapped, his tone sharp.
