Before Yardley could react, Herbert hung up.
In the dim light, Herbert's eyes darkened.
"You turned him down," Rudolf noted.
"She despises it when people use her as a bargaining chip," Herbert replied.
Rudolf stayed silent. He knew it was true. If Starla had really taken Susanna, no one was going to get the truth out of her by force—asking would only make her hate them more.
On the other end of the line, Yardley hadn't expected such a flat refusal. Herbert knew the value of the three Iseldor mines, yet he had said no.
Breathing heavily, Yardley called back. It took three tries before Herbert finally answered.
"Are you seriously turning this down?" Yardley demanded before Herbert could even speak.
"You know she won't tell me," Herbert replied.
"I'll add two more mines!"
"Why is Susanna so important to you?" Herbert asked, genuinely curious what made the woman so special to a man like Yardley.
