Herbert let out a bitter scoff. Because he had suddenly disappeared, Susanna had turned on Yardley, and Yardley had turned on Starla. And now that Susanna was dead, both men were going to unleash hell on Starla at the same time.
Herbert had never imagined a day where Fairfax and Yardley would be on the same side.
"What's Yardley's situation right now?"
"The details are still hazy," Rudolf replied. "All we know is he went back to the Hoggart Castle this morning, then left alone. But it's almost guaranteed he's going to make things miserable for Starla."
The fallout from Susanna's death wouldn't blow over easily.
Herbert fell silent. He knew full well Yardley would take this out on Starla.
Seeing his boss's silence, Rudolf added, "We probably can't get back into Maxlandia through official channels right now." If they wanted to return, they would have to find an alternate route. A total lockdown meant they had to stick to the shadows, just like Fairfax had.
"Make the arrangements. We're going back," Herbert ordered, his eyes still closed. He couldn't just leave her. He promised himself he wouldn't interfere—he would just watch from the dark and step in if Fairfax or Yardley posed a real threat.
