Darleen and Xenia descended the stairs, their demeanor completely transformed from the previous day. Darleen's submissiveness was gone, replaced by her usual arrogant, nose-in-the-air posture. As she passed through the living room, she even let out a disdainful 'humph,' a clear display of her renewed confidence.
Xenia shot Starla a venomous glare, a look that seemed to say that whatever power Starla held over them was about to disappear.
Starla merely watched them, a faint smile playing on her lips. The moment the front door closed, she turned to Garret.
"They must have overheard your call with Mr. Hoggart," Garret surmised.
"Did we say something we shouldn't have? Or perhaps something they could misinterpret?"
"You mentioned that you'd be returning to Yoran Country when you finished here, and you said you missed Mr. Hoggart."
"So, they've jumped to the conclusion that I have some lover on the side?" Starla chuckled. It was so typical of the Yelchin family. A leopard can't change its spots. Because they were rotten to the core, they assumed everyone else was just like them.
"If I'm not mistaken, they are on their way to see Mr. Farley now," Garret said.
"They're definitely going to him. If they've concocted a story like that, he'd be their first stop." They were undoubtedly eager to tell Herbert what a two-timing woman she was, using him to destroy the Yelchins while planning a tryst with her lover in Yoran Country.
"They have quite the imagination," Starla remarked with a laugh.
"Should I call Mr. Farley to give him a heads-up?" Garret asked.
"No need," Starla said. "If you call him, he'll be prepared. It's much more interesting to see how he reacts without a script."
Garret paused for a moment, then broke into a smile. His lady was certainly mischievous.
"Let her go. The Farley elders won't see her anyway," Starla said dismissively. Darleen had been trying to set Herbert up with Xenia for ages. But ever since the scandal broke about Xenia trying to steal her sister-in-law's marital home, her reputation in Marina City was in tatters. No respectable family would want her unless they were looking for domestic chaos.
"Understood."
Just then, Starla's phone buzzed. It was a text from Herbert: [Feeling better?]
Seeing his concerned message gave Starla a slight headache. She typed back a simple [Yes], keeping her tone cool and distant.
She wasn't a fool. She was a grown woman, and she had noticed the way Herbert looked at her, the way he had cared for her. She knew what it meant. But while divorcing Fairfax was about reclaiming her dignity and independence, deep down, Starla didn't believe she was worthy of a man like Herbert.
Garret watched her type the reply and sighed softly to himself.
