She was doing whatever it took to force Fairfax to sign the divorce papers, and she wouldn’t hesitate to be cruel. Anyone who helped him now was just obstructing her plan, and she wouldn’t let them off easy, no matter who they were.
“Darian doesn’t know about your connection to the Hoggart Group yet,” Caden pointed out.
“What are you trying to say?” Starla’s tone turned icy.
Caden immediately backtracked. “I won’t say a thing.”
He knew that her sibling relationship with Yardley needed to be kept quiet. The fewer people who knew, the better, and it absolutely could not reach Fairfax’s ears.
After a few more words, they ended the call.
…
Caden immediately tried to call Darian, but the line was busy. He had just been kicked out of the Yelchin Group office, and Darian was already on the phone. It wasn’t hard to guess who he was talking to. Fairfax had gone to Darian after all.
Caden’s head throbbed with frustration. Fairfax should be focusing on his own family’s crisis, especially his conflict with Starla. Instead of dealing with it, he was running around asking for help. Was he trying to drag all his friends down with him into bankruptcy?
Starla was ruthless, but in his own way, so was Fairfax.
…
Back at the Yelchin estate, after finishing her call, Starla turned to Garret. “Fairfax is looking for help.”
All of Fairfax’s usual contacts were being closely monitored, rendering his own people useless. His only option was to ask friends for favors, and beyond Caden and Darian, he had a number of other cronies in Marina City.
That morning, Harriet woke up to find that all her methods of payment had been disabled. At that moment, she finally, completely, believed what Brinley had told her about her miserable situation in Marina City.
When Brinley had claimed she couldn’t spend a single cent anywhere in the city, Harriet, far away in Yoran Country, had been skeptical. But now, she was a believer. It wasn’t just her; everyone around her found their funds completely frozen.
She immediately called Brinley.
“What did you do to her now?” Harriet’s voice was sharp and accusatory. She didn’t know the full situation and assumed Brinley must have provoked Starla again at the estate.
Brinley, shivering in the cold, felt a fresh wave of misery at Harriet’s tone. “What could I possibly do to her? I wouldn’t dare!”
Her exposed hand holding the phone was numb and aching from the bitter wind. Only now did she truly understand the meaning of bone-chilling cold.
