He answered, his voice uncharacteristically meek. “Starla.”

The voice on the other end was not Starla’s. It was a man with a distinct accent from Yoran. Darian instantly realized it was one of Starla’s people. If Starla had called him personally, it might have been an easier conversation. But this was someone else, one of her associates, and the implied warning was thick in the air.

Darian steadied his nerves. “Is this Mr. Garret?”

“It is. Are you certain you want to help Fairfax?” Garret’s tone was anything but polite.

Even over the phone, Darian could feel the man’s intimidating presence. A single thought flashed through Darian’s mind: This man is dangerous.

“I…”

“Pull your people back,” Garret cut him off, his voice firm.

Darian was silent.

“Withdraw them now,” Garret continued, “and we’ll spare ourselves the effort of dealing with Lynn Group.”

The message was brutally direct. If Darian’s people weren’t recalled immediately, Lynn Group would face dire consequences.
