"Everything you're going through is just karma," Starla said sharply. "Look at the seeds you planted. I'm merely delivering the harvest."
The word 'karma' struck Brinley like a physical blow. Why was she being punished? Because of the inhuman things she had done to Starla in the past.

Brinley stayed silent.

The phrase 'easy mark' made Brinley bristle, her resentment flaring up. An easy mark? Initially, when Starla first joined the family, she had seemed like a pushover. But once Fairfax moved her to Petal Villa, everyone realized she was just biding her time. No one had known where her true bottom line was.
"Tell your mother that she has to swallow the bitter pills she prescribed," Starla said, her tone suddenly turning lethal.
The finality in her voice seemed to wrap around Brinley's throat, suffocating her. "So... you really aren't going to let my mother off?"
