Just as Starla and Garret had predicted, Brinley's phone was blowing up. She was too terrified to answer it.

The relentless, frantic buzzing against her leg was a clear indicator of the sheer rage boiling over on the other end. When she didn't pick up, the texts started rolling in like rapid fire:

[Pick up the phone, you bitch!]

Seeing the word bitch pop up on her screen from Felix's number made Brinley flinch violently.

[Ignoring me? Fine. Never pick up again. As of today, you don't exist to me!]

It was as if he knew exactly what terrified her the most. He was grabbing her by her most vulnerable weakness and squeezing tight. Sure enough, the threat of being completely abandoned worked. She swallowed hard and dialed his number.

The second the call connected, Felix screamed into the receiver. "I told you, the child has to live!"

Every single syllable dripped with venomous fury. Brinley's chest tightened so much she could barely breathe.

"The child lives, and I die? You said no matter what, the kid has to survive. And the price for that is me?" Brinley screamed back, tears streaking her face.

A part of her still couldn't fathom that things between her and Felix had deteriorated to this point. She didn't want to accept that the monster on the other end of the line was the real Felix Fowler. After all, he had been so good to her before...

He had been so sweet that, even though he wasn't as exceptional as Faraday, she had willingly sacrificed everything for him. He used to cook for her. He used to brew her hot tea when she didn't feel well. He gave her the kind of simple, warm domestic bliss she had never experienced with Faraday. They had been so happy together.

Why had it all turned so toxic?
