Herbert Farley and Starla Lansbury were already furious. The fact that Caden Larson had personally driven Fairfax Yelchin to Hansville City the day before was a bitter pill to swallow.
Now, looking at Caden’s utterly defeated expression, their moods only darkened.
Feeling the suffocating hostility rolling off the couple, Caden cleared his throat. "I swear, I didn't do it on purpose."
Neither of them spoke. They just stared at him with eyes like ice.
Unable to bear the scrutiny, Caden panicked. "I really didn't mean to!"
"Yesterday, Fairfax called me and said it was all over. He asked me to drive him out of town." Caden threw his hands up. "He said 'it's all over'! Naturally, I assumed the two of you had finally finalized the divorce!"
Thinking back on it, Caden felt like an absolute idiot. How had Fairfax managed to play him so smoothly without even batting an eye?
Didn't the guy have a conscience? Didn't he know what kind of hell he was leaving Caden to face?
It was true what they said—sometimes the people who stabbed you in the back were the ones you called friends.
At the mention of the word 'divorce,' the temperature in the room plummeted even further.
Caden swallowed hard.
Great. No matter what he said now, he was just digging his own grave.
"I know I messed up."
The Larson family patriarch had chewed him out first thing this morning and ordered him to come fix this mess. But Caden had racked his brain the entire drive over and realized there was no magic fix. All he could do was beg for mercy.
Herbert’s eyes narrowed dangerously. "You drove all the way to Hansville City, and you didn't talk about anything? Or are you just completely brain-dead?"
"I thought it was over!"
How many times did he have to say it? It had nothing to do with being stupid. He genuinely believed Starla and Fairfax were officially done, and he was just doing a buddy a final solid.
"You thought?" The cold edge in Herbert's voice was no longer restrained. "Does the old man know you make a habit of acting on your own baseless assumptions?"
Caden froze. Faced with the crushing pressure radiating from Herbert, he snapped his mouth shut. He didn't dare utter another excuse.
Under that terrifying stare, Caden finally broke. "Fine. What do you want me to do?"
"My grandfather made it perfectly clear. If you guys don't forgive me today, I'm not allowed back in the house!"
Thinking about how terrified the patriarch was of Herbert's ruthless tactics, Caden felt a wave of despair. This was what he got for being a loyal friend.

"You're a failure as a husband and coward as a Man" This is what i want to say in Fairfax hahaha you dont deserved a wife if you cant protect her...
Hahaha This plot of story i hate about, choosing another girl instead of your own wife is something unreal, you didnt considered your wife feeling, you didnt even trust her and later on you will say sorry?? Was sorry will fixed everything you've done? Was sorry fixed her heart? it was unfair for your wife, you must choose your wife whatever it is. You know your wife well more than anyone else and the only person she should lean on was the person who pushes her away...
