Yardley noticed the shift in her expression immediately. "What's wrong?"
"Yesterday at the airport, I overheard him on a call. Something felt... off."
After turning it over and over in her mind, Starla finally decided to tell her brother about the phone conversation she had caught Herbert having. Yardley was family, after all.
"What did he say?" Yardley asked, his tone steady.
"I don't know the specifics. But I heard him tell whoever was on the other end to bury a secret and make absolutely sure it never reached my ears."
Though it was just a snippet of dialogue, it was enough to plant a garden of doubts in her mind. She hadn't stopped thinking about it all night.
Yardley's expression tightened for a fraction of a second. Just as Starla expected him to say he would look into it, he completely surprised her. "Whatever it is he's keeping from you, he's doing it because he doesn't want to see you get hurt."
Starla stared at him. Hurt? He didn't want her to get hurt? Was it really that simple? What kind of secret could possibly hurt her so badly?
"You need to trust his feelings for you, Starla. Okay?" Yardley added.
She fell silent. Trust. Feelings. She wasn't sure exactly when it had happened, but somewhere along the line, the concept of love and trust had become a fragile, broken thing in her world.
But hearing her brother defend him so confidently left her with little room to argue. She took a quiet breath and nodded. "Yeah."
Yardley clearly had unwavering faith in Herbert. And if a man like Yardley trusted him, surely there couldn't be a major issue, right? The thought managed to ease some of the tension knotting her chest. She hoped she was just overthinking things. Herbert wouldn't actually do anything to betray her, would he? She desperately wanted to believe that, even if her walls remained firmly up.
After dinner, Starla felt exhausted. Just as she was about to head upstairs, Herbert arrived to see Yardley.
"Mr. Farley," the butler greeted respectfully.

Hahaha This plot of story i hate about, choosing another girl instead of your own wife is something unreal, you didnt considered your wife feeling, you didnt even trust her and later on you will say sorry?? Was sorry will fixed everything you've done? Was sorry fixed her heart? it was unfair for your wife, you must choose your wife whatever it is. You know your wife well more than anyone else and the only person she should lean on was the person who pushes her away...
