A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 808

"I..." Tanya hesitated.

"Be a good girl. I need to make a trip back to my family's estate right now."

Originally, he had wanted to bring Tanya with him.

But anticipating the absolute bloodbath of a reaction he was about to face from the elders, Darian scrapped the idea.

Tanya was in a highly fragile state right now.

If he dragged her into the crossfire and she witnessed whatever ugly scene his parents were about to throw, she would instantly pack her bags and run for the hills.

Finally, under Darian's intense gaze, Tanya relented with a small nod. "Fine."

"Good girl."

Darian smiled and affectionately pinched her cheek.

After making sure Tanya was settled, he headed out to face the music. Before leaving, he specifically instructed the head housekeeper to prepare a highly nutritious, pregnancy-friendly lunch for her.

The second the front door clicked shut, Tanya pulled out her phone and called Starla.

Starla seemed incredibly busy, only picking up right before the call went to voicemail.

"Did you get it taken care of?"

Before Tanya could even say hello, Starla fired off the question.

Tanya's heart skipped a beat.

Just hearing the words 'taken care of' sent a fresh wave of anxiety crashing over her.

Even though Darian had promised he would handle the fallout with his family, Tanya knew better.

A situation like this was never handled easily.

"No," Tanya admitted quietly.

"No?"

"Yeah, no."

"I ran into Caden yesterday, and he shadowed me the entire time. Today, I actually made it to the clinic. They had literally just put me under anesthesia when Darian kicked the door in and pulled me off the table!"

"He got there after you were under?" Starla sounded stunned.

If he hadn't managed to stop the procedure, it meant he genuinely cared.

If he was just playing around with her, he would have let her go through with it. He probably wouldn't have even bothered showing up.

But the fact that he raced against the clock to save the baby?

"Yeah," Tanya sighed. "Do you think this is going to make my life a living hell?"

Starla went quiet.

"Starla, honestly? I'm terrified."

"Terrified of what?"

"I can't afford to waste years of my life fighting this battle!"

Darian was dead set on having this child, regardless of whether his parents blessed the union or not.

But Tanya refused to knowingly bring a child into a warzone of a family where they would be viewed as a bastard or an inconvenience.

"Then why did you even agree to date him in the first place?" Starla asked.

That question stung.

"I know you're usually incredibly pragmatic about this stuff," Starla pointed out.

Tanya had always recognized the red flags and understood the brutal reality of the wealth gap.

So why did she let Darian in?

"Because he refused to leave me alone!" Tanya groaned.

Starla paused.

"... Right."

Well, that was incredibly frustrating.
