A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 891

In the end, Starla Lansbury wasn't leaving after all.

That afternoon, Garret arrived at her door. His gait was visibly off, favoring one sideโ€”a clear sign he was injured. Yardley Hoggart had punished him.

Starla looked at Garret, her lips parting to speak, but the words caught in her throat. She couldn't bring herself to say a single thing.

"Mr. Hoggart said I should continue to stay by your side, Miss," Garret finally said.

It was the first time Yardley had compromised. And likely, it would be the only time. After all, she was his own flesh and blood; seeing her pushed to the absolute edge of her breaking point meant he had to soften his stance, at least a little.

Even so, it did nothing to change the icy resentment freezing Starla's heart.

She shot Garret a sidelong glance. "Brinley Seabrook. His people took her away, didn't they?"

Garret fell silent. By 'his people,' she meant Yardley's men. That silence was all the confirmation Starla needed. It was true. Yardley's men had intercepted Brinley.

Garret was the one who had orchestrated things on the ground, but he had formerly been Yardley's subordinate. Finding out where Brinley was had been entirely too easy for the head of the Hoggart family.

"Mr. Hoggart must have his reasons for doing this," Garret offered quietly. "He isn't taking Brinley's side."

Having witnessed everything that went down in Marina City, Garret knew better than anyone that Starla absolutely despised anyone who defended Brinley. Back then, Fairfax Yelchin had shown a hint of bias toward the woman, and Starla had practically burned the entire Yelchin family to the ground in response. Now, with her own brother seemingly protecting Brinley, the devastation she felt was unimaginable.

But the Hoggart family was her home. Yardley was her brother. Her hands were tied. To swallow all that suffocating injustice and do nothingโ€”it was a brutal challenge for her.

Starla took a deep, trembling breath. "His reasons. Right."

What kind of twisted reasoning was this?
