A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 938

With Starla already out of Yoran Country, Yardley's only leverage was to shake down Amos for her return.

"She doesn't want to go back," Amos fired back. "You need to respect her boundaries."

"I'm not wasting my breath on you."

"Push me any further, and I really will kill her!" Amos threatened.

"Think carefully before you do. Your entire—"

"Enough!" Amos snapped, hanging up the phone in a rage before Yardley could bring his organization into it.

So this was how it was going to be? That bastard was going all in on hardball?

Amos paced his office furiously before storming down to the medical wing.

Pushing the door open, he found a man wrapped head-to-toe in bandages like a mummy.

Fairfax.

Staring at the battered state of him, Amos muttered, "I'm starting to think none of this was worth it."

Fairfax was fully conscious but completely immobilized.

At Amos's words, his eyes locked onto him with a fierce intensity.

"Love is supposed to be a two-way street," Amos sighed. "But her heart clearly isn't with you anymore."

Even though Herbert hadn't secured her either, the reality remained that Starla had moved on from Fairfax.

To Amos, sacrificing this much for a woman who didn't love him back was a total waste. Even if Fairfax had been the one to ruin things in the first place.

"Get out!" Fairfax growled, having zero patience for Amos's unsolicited life advice.

"Look, I'm just saying—" Amos ran a hand over his face, genuinely exasperated. "Herbert and Yardley sabotaged my deal with Ciro. The partnership is dead."

"You think?" Fairfax cut him off harshly, refusing to hear another word. "They're actively negotiating the price of her life. What is there to think about?"

The simple fact that Herbert and Yardley were entertaining Licht's offers proved everything. They were already tempted.

Amos grimaced. "If they haven't handed her over to Licht yet, it's only because his offer isn't high enough."

He paused, the realization dawning on him. "Wait... so what do we do? No wonder that bastard Yardley suddenly launched an all-out assault on my operations."

They desperately needed Starla back in Yoran to secure whatever assets the old general was dangling in front of them.

It was sickening.

"Leak this information to her," Fairfax ordered. "Let her see exactly what the family and the fiancé she trusted are really made of."

"Why not just bring her straight to Cyrus Sea?" Amos challenged. "Let her see the physical price you paid to keep her safe?"
