Everyone laughed.
But Janina noticed something was off with Wendy. As she spoke, a flicker of sarcasm crossed her eyes. With everyone there, however, Janina didn't press the issue, especially not in front of Melody.
Summer picked up the thread. "Finding a boyfriend is fine, but you have to keep your eyes wide open. Find someone who loves you first. Whatever you do, don't be the first one to fall. In love, whoever falls first, loses."
Coming from someone who had just survived a toxic relationship, Summer's words carried weight. Everyone nodded in silent agreement.
Melody ate a piece of shrimp that Yates had peeled for her earlier. She knew that character was the most important thing in a man, and she was sure she had found it.
"We're planning to meet each other's parents over the holidays. If both sides approve, we're going to get married."
Melody's announcement was met with a moment of stunned silence.
Getting married after only six months?
Wendy frowned, about to say something.
Just then, Yates returned from his phone call, looking a little flustered.
He grabbed his jacket from the back of his chair, slipped his phone into his pocket, and, without much time for goodbyes, turned to Melody.
"Melody, my colleague just called. There might be a problem with my project proposal. My assistant is already on it, but I need to go back to the office to check. I can't stay."
This sudden change of plans threw Melody for a loop. It was the first time he was officially meeting her friends.
'The Graces' Chat' were her closest confidantes, and he was leaving before they'd even had a chance to get to know him.
But it was for work...
A flash of relief crossed Yates's handsome face, but his warm smile remained. "No, it's fine. You girls have a lot to talk about. Don't let me ruin your time. I'll just grab a cab."
After a quick farewell to the others, Yates left in a hurry.
Even though he'd said not to, Melody still walked him out to get a taxi, feeling sorry that her boyfriend had to work during his time off.
When Melody returned to the table, they continued eating and chatting, teasing her about how devoted she was to Yates.
Melody happily accepted their approval of him.
But Wendy's expression grew heavier. She hesitated several times, wanting to speak but holding back.
Finally, she couldn't hold it in any longer and opened her mouth.
