Three days after Marjorie learned about Ethan and Grace's accident, she broke up with West. Just like that, their five-year relationship came to an end. A few days later, she was with Clark.
West had been devastated by Marjorie's choice for a day before forcing himself to be strong. He didn't blame her. Their family was in a difficult situation, and at the time, he had been so deeply in love with her that he thought letting her go was the best thing for her.
Marjorie and Clark froze for a second when they saw West.
It was Clark who broke the silence. "West, what a coincidence. You… you all live here too?"
West just offered a faint smile. "Yeah, what a coincidence."
Beside him, Marjorie quickly composed herself, reverting to her usual sweet and gentle demeanor. "Mrs. Holt, Mr. Holt, I didn't expect to see you here." She then looked at Janina and asked, though she had already guessed her identity, "And this is?"
"Janina," she replied coolly. Grace simply gave a slight nod, the smile on her face vanishing as quickly as it had appeared. Ethan didn't even bother to pretend, his expression remaining cold. After his and Grace's accident, Abigail had personally brought Marjorie to their home to demand that West break up with her, saying the most awful things.
She said West was just a low-class chef and that her Marjorie was going to marry someone rich. The Holt family was so poor they could barely feed themselves, and now they had two invalids to care for. Her daughter would only suffer if she married into their family.
While the logic was sound, and he knew West and Marjorie would break up, he wished they could have done it with more dignity.
Abigail's face was wreathed in smiles. "Oh, what a good girl, not greedy at all, just like your brothers. I was just thinking, this jackfruit is a rare treat. My Marjorie and Clark bought it online. We're already tired of it. You take it back and let your brothers try something new."
Abigail was a master of passive aggression, playing the part of a friendly neighbor. Janina glanced at Grace and Ethan and saw the displeasure in their eyes. She was about to speak when Ethan's stern voice cut in. "How can you be so shameless? We said no, and you're still pushing it on us. My dog wouldn't even eat this stuff."
Abigail's smile froze on her face, but only for a second. It returned as she pretended not to understand, pulling the jackfruit back. "Fine, if you don't want it, I wouldn't have wanted to give it away anyway. Ethan, your temper is too fiery. You can't get so worked up just because you're blind."
Abigail took two steps closer, glanced at Grace, then met Ethan's eyes again, offering her 'kind' consolation. "But I don't blame you. Anyone in your situation would be upset. Look at you all, one paralyzed, one blind, four sons and none of them married, two daughters who are becoming old maids with no one to want them. If I were you, I'd be angry too. I get it, I really do."
