The moment Marjorie stepped out of the elevator, she could hear hysterical shouting.
She walked in to find her mother clutching her father's shirt, refusing to let go. She quickly shut the door and stepped between them.
"Mom, Dad, what's wrong? Can you both just calm down and talk things through? I could hear you all the way down the hall. What will the neighbors think if they hear you?"
Abigail always listened to her daughter. Not wanting to look like a shrew in front of her, she immediately let go of Jarvis.
Jarvis wanted to defend himself. All he'd done was ask if she'd made dinner, and she had exploded at him like a madwoman.
But in the end, he said nothing, afraid that speaking would only trigger another outburst from Abigail.
He decided it was better to just endure it. He silently picked up his briefcase and went to the bedroom.
Seeing Jarvis retreat without another word only angered Abigail more. Was he so fed up he didn't even want to talk to her anymore?
Unable to vent her frustration at him, Abigail turned her torrent of complaints onto her daughter.
"Did you see that? That's the thanks I get! I gave him children, I wait on him hand and foot every day, I work like a dog for him, and when I complain just a little, he gives me this attitude?"
Abigail was too embarrassed to mention Ethan and Grace, but she had a storm of resentment brewing inside her and desperately needed someone to talk to.
Marjorie guided her to the sofa and sat beside her, trying to soothe her.
"Mom, what really happened? Dad isn't someone who loses his temper easily. I know you both work hard for this family, and it's tough. Dad's tired after a long day at work. Whatever it is, you should talk it out, not just yell at him."
Hearing her daughter seemingly take Jarvis's side, Abigail's voice turned cold.
"What do you think it's about? Look at how fat he's gotten! He won't even think about losing weight. All he cares about is food. I say a few words about it for his own good, and he gets angry. I'm just worried about his health!"
Then, a thought struck her, and her eyes lit up. "Was this from Clark?"
Marjorie nodded. "Yes. He gave me one hundred thousand dollars as a gift."
Marjorie didn't mention that Clark had given her far more than that, including a credit card.
In the past, Clark used to send her flowers, chocolates, and jewelry.
Marjorie hated impractical gifts, especially flowers and chocolates, which she considered a complete waste of money.
Eventually, she told him to stop sending them and that she preferred cash over flashy gifts.
Clark took her words to heart. Now, for every holiday, besides a small present, he would convert the money he would have spent on a gift into cash and transfer it to her.
