Iris's slender fingers toyed idly with the tag on a dress, a faint smile on her red lips.
She wanted to show off in front of Summer, to provoke her even more.
She deliberately raised her voice to the manager. "Bring me all the most expensive clothes in your store. Money is no object. Someone else is footing the bill, anyway."
As she spoke, she kept glancing at Summer from the corner of her eye, a challenging glint in her brow, like a peacock flaunting its prize.
The manager cursed Iris a dozen times in her head but maintained a professional smile.
"Of course, Miss Iris. I'll go get the latest haute couture collection for you right away."
As she turned, the manager stole a glance at Summer, who was standing pale and trembling, her lips quivering.
Iris took her phone out of her bag, opened a chat, and cooed into the microphone, "Vincent, are you busy?"
Ugh.
The four friends listening in felt a wave of nausea at Iris's sickeningly sweet voice.
Iris deliberately held up the dress Summer had reserved, posing with it.
With a click, she snapped a selfie and sent it, following up with another voice message. "Vincent, does it look good?"
Not even three seconds later, Vincent's deep voice came through the speaker, laced with a tenderness he never showed Summer. "It's beautiful. It'll look even better on you."
Summer's hands began to tremble.
Vincent wouldn't answer her calls, and even his secretary only picked up reluctantly after several attempts.
But he could reply to Iris's message in a heartbeat.
Summer bit her lower lip so hard she could taste blood, but the metallic tang was nothing compared to the searing pain in her heart.
Watching their sweet exchange, her hands clenched into tight fists.
Iris was ecstatic with Summer's reaction.
This was exactly what she wanted: to see her break, to see her lose her mind.
Iris's smiling eyes held a playful glint as she spoke softly into her phone.
To assert her dominance, Iris sent one last voice message.
"Vincent, can you stay with me tonight? I keep having nightmares lately, and I'm a little scared to sleep alone..." Her voice trailed off with a perfectly timed quiver.
He replied instantly. "Okay."
His response was a slap across Summer's face.
Her mind flashed back to a few months ago, when she had a fever of 104 degrees.
Vincent had said, "Don't be so dramatic. It's just a fever. Adults should know how to take their own medicine."
They were flirting right in front of her, using her money to support his mistress.
What did Vincent take her for?
All her patience had only earned her deeper wounds inflicted by them.
Iris swung her phone triumphantly, murmuring just loud enough for Summer to hear.
