“She’s still not back.”

Kade stood in my doorway, He was looking nervous.

“I know,” I said.

“The alphas are still waiting. In the throne room.”

“Fuck.” I pulled on my shirt. “Tell them I’ll be there in ten minutes.”

Kade raised an eyebrow. “You’re going to drag your runaway bride back by force?”

“If I have to.”

Through the bond, I coudn’t feel her anymore.

Why wasn’t she coming back? Her family clearly didn’t want her Did she hate me that much?

Future Remi’s voice echoed in my head. “Wear thicker pants. Leather.”

I looked at my regular pants and shook my head.

Taking advice from a dream? That was foolish. I left my chambers.

I made it halfway down the hall before someone stepped in front of me.

Alpha Manuel of Riverside Pack.

“The seven alphas are still waiting,” he said. “You can’t keep everyone waiting forever.”

Abel appeared from behind me. “Call him the DARK ALPHA. Correct yourself. Now.”

Manuel’s jaw clenched. “The Dark Alpha can do whatever he wants, I suppose. Make everyone wait while he—”

“Exactly,” Abel interrupted. “He can. And you all MUST wait.”

“Tell that to the pissed alphas inside.” Manuel looked at me. “And to your mother. She’s announced to the council that your bride didn’t die. That the curse made her mad instead. Is it true? Is Remi alive?

I stepped closer to him. “I owe you no explanation. Remi is none of your business.”

“But she IS my business.” Manuel didn’t back down. “She’s from MY pack. And unlike some packs, we protect each other. To the death.”

“Are you challenging me?”

“I’m asking for answers. Either give me her dead body to take home and bury properly, or give me an explanation. Cursed Alpha.”

Abel moved to hit him. I caught his arm. “No need to cause a mess,” I said. “Might stain my polished walls.”

I walked past Manuel. “You reek of Riverside poverty,” I said. “Maybe take a bath before demanding things from me.”

Manuel’s face went red. “At least MY pack would rather die for me than watch me get branded cursed. I don’t need to force women into

my bed to get an heir.”

I turned and grabbed him by the throat. And slammed him against the wall.

“Say that again,” I said quietly.

He couldn’t. I was choking him.

“Nero.” Kade’s voice. Calm. “We have witnesses.”

I looked. Three other Alphas stood at the end of the hall. Watching.

Some maids had stopped. Staring.

Guards looked uncomfortable.

I dropped Manuel. He hit the ground hard.

“Council chambers. Now.” I walked past them all. “Let’s get this over with.”

The room went silent when I entered.

Seven Alphas. Their advisors. My mother in the corner with her wim. Both wearing identical smug expressions.

I looked around. “Where’s Priscilla’s family?”

“They left,” Kade said. “After you hit their son. Very embarrassingly, if I must add. Expect a formal complaint tomorrow. One you will NOT like.”

“I don’t care.”

I sat on my throne and Looked at the assembled alphas.

“I heard you were all waiting,” I said. Checked my watch. “You hate five minutes. Actually, two minutes. Two of you get to talk. Then I’m leaving.”

Alpha Manuel started to speak.

Abel held up a hand. “Not you. You never learn, do you?”

The other six alphas looked at each other. They were scared.

Finally, one of them cleared his throat, Multiple times,

“One minute,” I said.

He cleared his throat again. “Your mother, Regal Anatoria, announced that she was attacked by a mad wolf. She claims it was your bride. The one we witnessed dying. She says the curse mad her unstable. Is this true, Dark Alpha?”

A maid approached and offered me water.

I took it and drank without looking. I was too frustrated to care.

The water tasted bitter.

“Yes,” I said. “She’s alive.”

The room erupted.

“How did she survive?”

“The curse-”

“This is unprecedented-”

“QUIET.” My voice cut through the noise.

They fell silent.

“So is it true?” another Alpha asked. “She’s mad? The curse has taken over her?”

I opened my mouth to say no. To defend her.

Abel leaned close and whispered. “Maybe don’t tell them she’s not mad yet. Unless you want her bloodline as your Luna.”

I froze.

“She’s from Riverside,” Abel continued. Quiet. Just for me. “We all thought she was going to die. If she survives, she has to be the Luna. And we can’t have that, can we?”

My mind raced.

Remi. I’d been lost in Remi World. Forgetting my duty.

She couldn’t be my Luna. She was from the lowest pack. She would taint my bloodline. The Pack would never accept her.

“Yes,” I heard myself say. “She’s mad.”

Manuel stood. “LIAR.”

“Guards,” Abel said. “Escort Alpha Manuel out.”

“I’m leaving.” Manuel headed for the door.“But I promise, I’ll be back.”

The door slammed behind him.

The other Alphas started talking among themselves.

“Since the curse has been broken and she carries it, she can never be Luna.”

“Never.”

“She’s killed and tainted her hands. Now the curse punishes herr it.”

I stood. “I’m leaving. You can all leave now.”

“Dark Alpha.” One of them spoke up. “When are we getting a tru Luna? All the other powerful packs have heirs and Lunas.”

“Whenever I wish.” I walked toward the door. “Now get out,”

I made it to my chambers.

“No one comes to this wing,” I told the guards. “No one. Everyong stay away.”

They bowed and left.

I closed the door and leaned against it. I was alone. Finally.

Through the bond, I felt Remi. Still distant. Still weak..

I’d just called her mad. Branded her insane to the entire council.

She’d never forgive me. I could still taste that water. Bitter.

My head felt heay.

No.

Not sleep. Not now.

I stumbled toward the chains. I needed to lock myself in. But my hands wouldn’t work right.

The room spun.-⠀⠀

Someone had given me something. To make me sleep.

I hit the floor.

The sleepwalking sickness took over.

I couldn’t control my body.

I was aware. Trapped in my body. Watching myself move.

My hands opened the door. My feet walked down the hall:

Guards saw me. Stepped back. Too afraid to approach.

“Alpha?” one called.

I couldn’t answer. Couldn’t stop.

Down the stairs. Through the courtyard. Into the forest.

The curse pulled me.

A branch caught my shirt. Tore it.

Another scraped my chest. Drew blood.

I kept walking.

I was deep in the forest. Trees everywhere, Darkness.

And I couldn’t stop.

My body kept moving. With No control.

Branches tore at my skin. I felt pain but couldn’t react.
