CHAPTER 102
GABRIELLE’S POV
Dainon ended the call after Jared uttered those words. His eyes were back to their cold default and I could feel a sudden distance
between us.
My throat ran dry. “Damon
ti
“You lied.”
Fuck, I shouldn’t have lied if he was going to find out anyway.
He threw my phone on the bed and I picked it up to switch it off. I hesitated, unsure of what I should say next.
“I’m sorry,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. I cleared my throat and tried again. “I’m sorry, Damon.”
He closed the space between us, his hands cupping my cheeks. “I know you are sorry, Gabrielle. But Jared dies today. No need for an apology.”
Chill ran up my spine.
I should have been ecstatic about getting my revenge on Jared, but I wasn’t.
It made me sad in a way that I didn’t understand. He was also the only person Emily had after Father disowned us. I might have cut ties with her but I still cared about her as a sister would.
From afar, of course.
I swallowed. “Let’s calm down and talk things through, okay? We don’t have to-”
“He called my wife a fucking bitch as if he isn’t still able to breathe by her grace,” Damon cut in, rage blazing in his eyes. “I’d never call you that. And I’d never stand for anyone calling you that.”
I shook my head. “Please, don’t do anything yet.”
Shock flashed in his eyes and he let go of me suddenly. Cold seeped into my face at the sudden lack of his warmth.
He ran a hand through his hair. “You’re still going to defend him? After all he did to you?”
“No, that’s not what I meant,” I replied. “I just need a little more time. That’s all.”
I could see his hands curling into fists at his sides, the tendons standing out beneath his skin like wires pulled too tight.
“Time,” he repeated slowly, tasting the word. “For what?”
I stepped closer despite the warning bells screaming in my head. “To prepare myself for what might happen after.”
He frowned. “Or to give them another chance to hurt you again?”
My lips parted to speak but no words came out.
His jaw flexed. “I’ve been patient with you because I know how you feel about your sister. Do you still have feelings for Jared?”
“Of course, not,” I cut in fast. I didn’t want him to have the wrong ideas. “I don’t have feelings for Jared anymore.”
He stared at me for a long minute and exhaled. “Fuck, Gabrielle! Then why the hell are you doing this? Why are you trying stop me?”
I couldn’t respond.
I didn’t have a strong enough reason.

I stared up at him. “Please… I’m begging you, Damon. I need just a little more time to… clear my head.”
His expression softened for a moment as silence passed between us.
“You should have told me,” he said at last. “The moment he reached out.”
“I know,” I whispered. “I was scared of exactly this.”
His eyes dropped to my hands, still trembling despite my effort to keep them still. He exhaled through his nose like he was forcing something down.
I wrapped my arms around him and hugged him tightly before he could say anything else, pressing my body to his in an attempt to distract him maybe.
I felt his hand pat my back stiffly. He was still furious but at least, he’d hold on for now.
He’d hold on for me.
A knock came on the door and Susan’s head pushed in. Her eyes widened when she saw us hugging
She cleared her throat awkwardly. “Lila is here now, sir. She’s waiting downstairs.”
Then she disappeared as fast as she appeared.
I pulled away from Damon. “I thought she was staying with Anya until she fully recovered.”
He didn’t respond immediately.
“I’m taking her out to spend some time together,” he said, his voice still cold. “Do you want to come along?”
I wanted to but I could still remember my last conversation with Lila. Interfering in her time with her father would only make things worse between us.
I shook my head. “No. I have other plans. You won’t kill Jared, right?”
He hesitated at first before giving me a curt nod as he turned to walk away.
“Damon?”
He paused by the door and turned to me. “Yes?”
I smiled at him. “Thank you.”
He stared at me for a second longer than necessary before walking out of the room without another word.
I exhaled and fell on the bed, my heart still racing wildly.
DAMON’S POV
“Will I see you again tomorrow, Daddy?” Lila asked with a sad face.
I patted her hair gently. “Daddy has to travel tomorrow, Lila. But I’ll call in the morning and I’ll call again before you sleep, okay?”
She smiled and hugged me before running up the stairs to her bedroom.
Anya folded her arms across her chest. “You’ll call me, you mean? You know she’s too young to have a phone.”
“I always call you, Anya,” I responded, glancing through Lila’s allergy report and taking mental notes.

Her eyes narrowed at me. “Where are you traveling to?”
I looked at her. “Why do you care?”
Her jaw dropped but she caught herself fast. “You’re the father of my child. I have the right to know your whereabouts at all times.”
I sighed and kept the paper in my pocket. “I’ll call tomorrow, Anya.”
I handed over her weekly cheque and walked out of her house but I could still hear her behind me, following me to the garage.
I got into the car and started it when she knocked on the window. “What now?”
Her jaw tightened. “Is Gabby going with you?”
“I don’t know,” I responded. “I haven’t asked her yet. Can I go now?”
She hesitated, but pulled away eventually. “Drive safely.”
I gave her a nod and drove out of her property. I should be going home to my wife now, but I had one more person to spend some
time with.
The drive there took me about forty minutes and would take another forty back but it would be worth it in the end.
I had already called beforehand so the sergeant just led me to the private room they had prepared for me.
The room smelled like disinfectant and stale air. There were no windows, just a metal table bolted to the floor and two chairs facing each other.
Jared was already there when I walked in.
He looked smaller than I remembered. His wrists bore faint red marks from the cuffs he’d clearly been freed from only minutes
ago.
